Oasis now like KHHT L.A. as of Midnight 12/26

Interesting so far as those who speculated Oasis will change did - but to keep things confusing they kept the name. At midnight KC and Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go" started and then classics from others such as Soul II Soul, Donna Summer, Rockwell and O'Jays are now on with all smooth jazz removed. Calling themselves on their website as playing great hits of all time. Refreshing!

I'm glad that my speculation came true. I think they picked a very good format to switch/evolve to. I heard Cat Lee is back over there, he will be great for that format.

They are going to start "Commercial free Monday's" like sister station 107.9 does.

Which stations do you think this new format will impact the most? KKLZ plays some of this music. KSNE shares some of the softer titles. KCEP plays some Urban gold. So far I haven't heard much of what KPLV used to play except maybe Stevie B-Spring Love. I wonder if CC heard that the OASIS would switch to this format and if that influenced them to shift KPLV more CHR?

I wonder if the new OASIS will add a slow jamz show at night?

it will also be interesting to see where the displaced smooth jazz listeners go. Many might stick with the OASIS, they even have the same name. Plus they always did play some Urban AC. I just heard Sade-Your Love Is King which was played on the previous format.

Although this new format seems very office friendly some offices might switch to KSNE. Maybe the jazz fans will switch to KUNV? Then again if they were a jazz purist they probably disliked smooth jazz in the first place.

I am hearing some more Rhythmic AC songs that PARTY used to play such as Lisa Lisa-I Wonder If I Take You Home and CeCe Penniston-Finally.

They are a playing a great one right now GQ-I Do Love You. I hope they play Bloodstone-Natural High. I think this station is going to take away some of KKLZs Hispanic audience.

this is really pathetic. not only are they gunning after the kings of disco, KKLZ, they are attempting it on a poor signal. Really, what does this new format offer over what KKLZ, KVGQ or KKJJ already spin?? those 3 offer superior sound and signal strength.

The imaging is stale, the promos still feature the Jazz format and the station voice is from that crud alternative channel they operate. Someone please tell the bank that is operating these turds to pony up some cash and improve these properties

105.7 -- I'll give it a chance, so far I like it. It is about time somebody plays music that spans generations with "taste" . As long as it doesn't become repetitive, with say the same 1200 songs over and over into-the-ground. I heard: Isn't She Lovely, Baby I Need Your Loving, I Pledge My Love, Betcha By Golly Wow, Lucky Star, Spill The Wine, Celebration, You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman and others from the sixties to the eighties. This is a real class act for Las Vegas for 2010. Kudos to whomever made the switch!

With due respect Buzz I don't think the signal will be that much of an issue with this station. The signal doesn't seem that bad to me, it's not nearly as weak as 107.9 was. Also for listeners who enjoy this music they will put up with a somewhat inferior signal. Even if this becomes a middle of the pack station it will be an improvement over their grim pre-currency PPM smooth jazz numbers.

After listening over the weekend KKLZ has to be the main target (KOAS even has a liner "The greatest music of all time"...very close to KKLZs "greatest hits..") KSNE seems to be the secondary competitor. Buzz mentioned KKJJ but the two stations share little or no music. Although the new OASIS reminds me of the Urban AC version of JACK in a sense. They play a wide range of decades and a huge variety of music within the R&B genre from Rhythmic AC to disco to classic soul.

I heard them play Tierra-Together. Great song and it reenforces my opinion that this will be a big station among (English speaking) Hispanics, I wonder if they will play "Mamacita"? KKLZ started playing it last year,

I was really happy to hear them play Barbara Lewis-Baby I'm Yours. It brings back good memories of when I played it at a gold based AC in 1985. The song was new to me at the time, became one of my favorites on the station and has since held a special place in my heart.

Some other songs I hope they play (maybe they do already)..

Deniece Williams-Free
Deniece Williams-Silly
Brothers Johnson-Strawberry Letter 23
Earth Wind & Fire-Reasons
Earth Wind &Fire-Fantasy
O'Jays-I Love Music
Isley Brothers-Who's that Lady
Major Harris-Love Won't Let Me Wait

I agree with Buzz. PPM amounts to taking a product already debilitated by years of bad management and making it even less legitimate. Shouldn't be long now until the majority of stations within any market all start to sound the same. The reason you don't see a listener revolt first-hand, is because PPM is only measuring those "listeners" who haven't quit radio for good, in favor of the better variety and more satisfying sounds of their iPods.

105.7 The Oasis

I live near Providence, RI and I wish we had an old school station like this.  This is my favorite music.  I am sure they have Float On by the Floaters also.  However the Oasis name does not really go with the old school music.  How about Ace 105.7 or 105.7 the Ace to go along with the casino theme of Vegas.

Some of my favorites they should consider, if they don't play them currently:

Special Lady, Ray, Goodman, and Brown
Deniece Williams, It's Gonna Take a Miracle
Come Go With Me, Teddy Pendergrass
You Should Be Mine, Jeffrey Osbourne
Searching, Change
Casanova, Gerald Levert
Mama Used To Say, Junior
Encore, Cheryl Lynn
Love Come Down, Evelyn Champagne King
Genius of Love, Tom Tom Club
Found A Cure, Ashford and Simpson
Atomic Dog, George Clinton
Flashlight, Parliament
Cutie Pie, One Way
Square Biz, Teena Marie
Outstanding, Gap Band
Street Life, Randy Crawford

Those are good songs radiojay1. The funny thing is I thought of "Special Lady" right after I posted my list and that's the song you led off with.

On a different radio board somebody argued KOAS sould have gone AAA instead. They said LV didn't need another Rhythmic AC because PARTY 93.1 already exists. I disagree, the two stations are nothing like each other, I bet they only share 10% of the same music...especially since KPLV shifted more towards CHR. Besides AAA is the one format that would have done even worse than Smooth Jazz did.

They are playing lot's of good music including many of the songs on these lists. I like that they sprinkle in some "oh wow" type songs like Timmy Thomas-Let's Live Together.

One suggestion....Change the TV commercial. They are still running smooth jazz spots!

This station is what Urban AC is supposed to be...NO currents...just the good stuff from back in the day...Sunny should be worried...especially if they do a quiet storm at night...Wonder what JJ Austin is doing these days? They let her program her own music and she had monster numbers at 94.1 when they were doing the format, but the rest of that station sounded like garbage musically..Sunny is weak with their syndicated music junk...If Oasis can take advantage with a live LOCAL show at night, Delilah is history and Melanie in the morning will be in trouble big time..Hence, the station you listen to at night, is the station you wake up with in the morning....I also like the way the execute commercial free monday...I am sure Sunny will have to cut someone by years end to make up for Clear Channel's lost revenue from what will be their former cash cow..Good Job, Carmi!

I agree they sound good but I don't think they will hurt KSNE that bad. They will take some audience from several different stations.

Wow, it seems like the station was a huge success. The ratings show that KOAS has a 5.8, #3 in the market.

Where's Buzz at these days to tell us why the sudden surge in success at Riviera? ???

I'm confused. On paper, the new Oasis doesn't make sense. Yet in the January ratings, it jumped all the way to #3, ahead of Sunny and Mix, two AC stations that People Meters are supposed to favor, since they get played in stores, offices and other workplaces where visitors and employees will be forced to listen.

First, the music goes back to the 60s. I heard the Supremes, the Four Tops and Jackson 5 in the last hour, as well as the Emotions "Best of My Love" from the 70s. Didn't they have to blow up Smooth Jazz because it skews too old? So you replace it with a format that plays 60s and 70s songs but doesn't play currents? Sunny plays very few 70s songs these days and I'm not sure if they play any 60s anymore. And I don't think Mix plays anything pre-1980. And they play a percentage of current and post-2000 hits.

Second, I'm hearing VERY soft songs mixed in too. Again, Soft AC stations try not to play any really soft songs, even if they were hits, for fear younger demos will get bored. Many Soft ACs have just about eliminated Norah Jones, even if she sold a kazillion CDs. They'd rather image themselves as being soft, but really be only a bit softer than a Hot AC.

Third, the Las Vegas African-American population is quite small. True, Hispanic females like rhythmic music. But do they want a diet of NOTHING but black artists? Some of the songs are cross-overs, having hit the Top 40. But some of the songs sound to me like they only charted on Urban stations. I'm not hearing any white artists who have a rhythmic feel, such as Madonna or Hall & Oates.

Fourth, the DJ never talks on top of the music. Songs fade out to the end, many songs play in a row without the DJ being heard. Again, doesn't that presentation skew old?

Hey, it's hard to argue with success. But who is this station aimed at? And why is it playing so much OLD music? And why in mostly white and Latino Las Vegas is all the music by black artsts?

@Gregg...The ironic thing is that if they were more mainstream... newer/harder/faster/whiter and talked over music not only wouldn't they have been #3 their first month I would guess they would be closer to the third last place station. They would just blend in with the scenery and not stand out in any way.
