Obit: Betty Garrett at 91...Regular on "All in the Family" & "Laverne & Shirley"

Re: Obit: Betty Garrett at 91...Regular on "All in the Family" & "Laverne & Shirley"

A great performer. Before Norman Lear resurrected her career on All In The Family, Garrett had been a member of the "stock company" for MGM musicals in Hollywood's Golden Age. In the series of Kelly-Sinatra musicals, she was often the aggressive females pursuing the shy, skinny kid (Sinatra). Her career, and that of her husband, Larry Parks (Al Jolson in the Jolson Story) was derailed in the 50s by blacklisting.

I'm always gratified to read obits (for actors or anybody else) that show they've lived long fruitful lives, and were active to the end. It was certainly true in Betty's case. She was still teaching weekly classes in musical comedy, and was doing well to the end.

This is really weird: the other day Turner Classic Movies was
showing "The Jolson Story, " which starred Larry Parks (and,
not incidentally, revived Jolson's career in the late 1940s), and
I remembered that Betty Garrett was Parks' wife. I remember her
well as Irene Lorenzo, and also that both she and Parks were victims
of the blacklist. Funny how something out of nowhere crosses your
mind like that, then a few days later you read that the person has
passed away.

I especially like to hear about people that were blacklisted because of "The Red Scare" of the 50's that went on to future success.

She is the second "All in the Family" vet to pass in the last week - Peggy Rea also died at 89.
