Obit: Fess Parker of "Daniel Boone" dies at 85

Fess and Buddy were two of my earliest and favorite TV actors in "Davy Crockett".

They both seemed like class acts and general good guys. I'm happy they had long and successful lives even though neither would be remembered in the movie and TV industry as top draws.

Wish I had an inventory of classic coonskin caps and Davy Crockett lunch boxes. I'm guessing the bid price just went up.
 
not to quibble, Carmine, but Fess is probably MUCH better tknown to baby boomers as Davey Crockett, "The KING of the wild frontier."

His sidekick in the Crockett series was Buddy Ebsen

I just copied and pasted a portion of the title from the CNN site. Yes, I certainly knew him better as Davey Crockett. Never got a coonskin cap though.

But all of those western series of that time were great fun.
 
A personal flashback when I was about 5: Going thru the trails and forests of the Adirondacks, with my coonskin cap on singing Davey, Davey Crockett, king of the wild frontier.
 
Nothing against Mr. Parker, but this was a case of the 'sidekick' out-pacing the lead actor. As we all know, Buddy Ebsen (died 2003 at age 95) had a 9 year run on TV as Jed Clampett, in The Beverly Hillbillies, followed by another 7 years as Barnaby Jones...a Quinn Martin production...also starring...
 
I have, as part of a Tennessee Ernie Ford collection, his rendition of "Davy Crockett", don't know if it was a hit or not.

I believe I read a long time ago where Parker was trying to find a way to do "Davy Crockett" as a series but Disney owned the rights to it..Which is when he came up with the idea to do "Daniel Boone." He did seem like a very good, humble man that appreciated the fans..
 
Bill Hayes was on "Days Of Our Lives." He played nightclub
singer Doug Williams; my mom used to go wild every time
he sang "The Look Of Love." He married his co-star, Susan
Seaforth, the other half of the Doug-and-Julie romantic duo
that was red-hot in daytime in the '70s, before Luke and Laura
of "General Hospital" stole their thunder.

Although his recording of the Davy Crockett theme was the
highest-ranked on the Billboard charts, I think most critics
today prefer Tennessee Ernie's version, which, I admit, is
quite good.
 
The western-swing group, "Asleep At The Wheel" has also done a rendition of "The Ballad of Davy Crockett". It appears on their "Remembers the Alamo" CD.
 
Man, it looks like this is going to be as bad a year for obits as 2009 was. In the past week or so, that makes three, with Merlin Olsen and Peter Graves.

Kentucky Headhunters did a cover version which was a minor hit in the early '90s. I remember playing it.
