Obit: Frank Magid at 78, creator of "Action News"

Absolutely. What we see today on local and network news is a direct influence from Mr. Magid and his associates.

He also had influence on radio, one of the pioneers in call-out, and a predictor of success for music on FM.

RIP. It was said that Magid detested the name Action News, but that moniker was just used as a generic label for a style of newscast - it carried different names in different markets. In 1970s-80s San Francisco, the "if it bleeds, it leads" newscast in the Magid formula was KGO-TV's News Scene. And the formula worked - KGO-TV dominated the news ratings for about a decade. The station here with the Action News name (KTVU) was actually quite tame by comparison.

Llew--back then wasn't it said that the KGO call letters stood for
"kickers, guts and orgasms"?

Barbara Matusow's book confirms this.

BTW, I would recommend Craig Allen's book News is People for an in-depth overview of Magid's influence.

Infamous prime-time teaser 'back in the day' from anchor Van Amburg; "Severed penis found on railroad tracks. Details at 11:00!"

Also, if you can find it, Ron Powers' The Newscasters, published in 1978.
