Obit: James J. Kilpatrick, Conservative voice on "60 Minutes", at 89

Actually, Kilpatrick and Alexander were one impetus for the SNL "Point/Counterpoint" skits. Another was the "op-ed" duo of conservative Dr. Martin Abend and liberal Prof. Sidney Offit on New York station WNEW-TV's (now WNYW Fox 5) 10 O'Clock News - and of course, even in their most heated debates, Dr. Abend never said, "Professor Offit, you ignorant slut . . . " (He did, however, more than once suggest Prof. Offit go back to Russia - but that's another story.)

And just to clarify: Mr. Kilpatrick never did say "Shana, you ignorant slut..."

No, he sure didn't.

I recall these segments quite well. They would get a little heated, though nothing like what we see today. However, for the time, Point/Counterpoint seemed like pretty contentious stuff. SNL brilliantly extrapolated on the well-watched segments with Dan Aykroyd saying what we all thought Kilpatrick may well have thought of saying now and then - though never (ever) would or could.

That's what the sketch so damn funny! :D

I think people finally got tired of the fact that Jack (as he
liked to be known) and Shana never agreed on anything, and
the segment was replaced by Andy Rooney's. I wonder what
"60 Minutes" will come up with when he's gone?
