Obit:James Whitmore at 87...TV/movie actor also pitched "Miracle-Gro" plant food

Re: Obit:James Whitmore at 87...TV/movie actor also pitched "Miracle-Gro" plant

I had wondered for sometime if something was
wrong with Mr. Whitmore, since I hadn't seen
his "Miracle-Gro" commercials in what seems like
several years.

My personal favorite performance of his was in
"The Shawshank Redemption" as Hatlen, the convict
who's been inside for so long that he can't cope with
the outside world when he's released, and ends up
committing suicide.

I wish I had been older than five when "The Law And
Mr. Jones" debuted in 1960 (or seven when we started
getting it in Raleigh in 1962). I've never heard anything
bad about that show; it just happened to be a cult favorite
that ABC first canceled, then revived at midseason of 1961-62.
(Would that CBS had done the same thing with "Trials Of
O'Brien" a few years later.)

While "Them" was a motion picture, it has been shown on TV many, many times. As such, with all of the roles James Whitmore has played, I remember him as the police officer in that science fiction film. His character is killed at the end of that film saving the two young boys from the giant ants.

Whitmore was great as Harry Truman in the one man play that was made into a movie. I also remember him playing a role on the Twilight Zone as the leader of a group of space travelers marooned on a planet for years. He didn't want to give up his role as leader when a rescue ship came so he stayed behind alone on the planet.

What is a shame is that Whitmore was such a versatile actor and had been around for so many years, playing numerous roles, yet his obit was less than two sentences.
