Obit: Jan Murray, Host of "Treasure Hunt" & "Charge Account"...@ 89

(From the N-Y Times:)

Jan Murray, a stand-up comedian who became one of television's first stars, died yesterday at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 89.

Mr. Murray's gravelly voice and quick wit entertained a generation of Americans through a long string of television game shows, including "Songs For Sale," which had been a radio show and ran on television from 1950 to 1952, and "Dollar a Second," which ran from 1953 to 1957. He also was the creator and producer of his most popular show, "Treasure Hunt," which ran from 1956 to 1959.

Mr. Murray also appeared in about 20 movies and worked as a substitute host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show."

The originals, sadly, are fading away. They were the make-do people rooted in the early days ot television when people made a name for themselves based on raw talent and a sincere desire to communicate with and entertain the audience. Some made fairly decent money, considering the times, but the paycheck was only part of the total package for them. It was indeed the Golden Age of Television.

Though I wasn't around for the Golden Age of TV, I'll say AMEN to that! I remember Jan Murray's appearances on game shows like Break The Bank (1976), Hollywood Squares, Tattletales, etc.
