Obit: Journalist/author Shana Alexander at 79...Did "Point-Counterpoint" on "60 Minutes"

Obit: Journalist/author Shana Alexander at 79...Did "Point-Counterpoint" on "60 Minutes"

The A-P is reporting journalist and author Shana Alexander
died of cancer yesterday in California.
She was 79.
She was the first woman staff writer at Life magazine and the first
female editor at McCall's, but she was perhaps best known for her
"Point-Counterpoint" segments aired on the CBS newsmagazine "60 Minutes"
in the late 1970's with conservative James Kilpatrick.
Alexander also wrote a number of nonfiction books, including
"Anyone's Daughter," a biography of kidnapped heiress Patricia
Hearst.

She was, also, the insperation for the term, "Jane, you sleezy (BLEEP)" from Saturday Night live. However, Ms. Alexander was certainly not a (BLEEP). She represented the left side very well. She was a class act.

Yup, the segment was indeed spoofed on Saturday Night Live with Dan Ackroyd and
Jane Curtin and 60 Minutes revived it briefly, with Bob Dole and Bill Clinton.

Re: Obit: Journalist/author Shana Alexander at 79...Did "Point-Counterpoint" on "60 Minutes"

According to Brooks and Marsh, Shana Alexander was not the original "liberal" debater on "60 Minutes"' "Point/Counterpoint". Nicholas VanHoffman filled the role from the segment's beginning in 1971 (when "60 Minutes" became a weekly show on Sundays at 6 P.M. ET, except during football season, when it usually wasn't on) until 1974.

When "60 Minutes" returned for another season in January, 1975, Alexander had replaced VanHoffman.

James Kilpatrick was the "conservative" debater on "Point/Counterpoint" for the segment's entire run.

Alexander left in 1979, and "Point/Counterpoint" was replaced with Andy Rooney's wry commentaries.

You're right. I caught that later reading an orbit on her. That would be...
Jane you ignorant sl*t. But I thought he (Akroyd) said sleazy at least on one occasion.
