Obit: Porter Wagoner: 1927-2007 -- Country Singer -- Hosted His Own Show

I'm sorry to learn of his passing. His syndicated TV show may have been the only country music shown that some people saw in the late 1960's. I always remember that amid the various kinds of music and laughter on that show, there was also a religious song each week as well.

Porter and Dolly was a mainstay on WHIO-TV in Dayton at 5:30 Saturdays. It was in a block of other country shows, one being "That Nashville Music".

I remember Porter also...He also had a comedic sidekick named Speck Robes(hope I spelled that one right). "Hee-Haw" also aired in sydnication beginning in 1971 after being cancelled by CBS and was aired in that same time frame with Porter and "Nashville Music" Not a huge fan of Porter but his duets with Dolly helped launch her carreer. Dolly owes a lot to Porter Wagoner. His backup group had the appropriately named "The Wagonmasters" ..complete with the rhinestone suits and Porter walking slowly into the studio with cowboy boots on...a cool introduction to his show.

It was Speck Rhodes, of the Rhodes family of country music. "The Rhodes Show" was part of the Saturday afternoon block of country music programs carried in Memphis. The name "Slim Rhodes" might ring a bell for some of you. Willie Nelson's short lived satellite network in the 90's called the "Outlaw Music Network" aired a lot of the old Porter Wagoner shows. They were great to watch again.

Thanks for the correction Album...It's been thirty some odd years!
