Obit: Ray Welch, 68; ad man was voice of Hub radio commercials

Mr. Welch died of cancer Sunday in his house in Bristol, R.I...He was 68.
(He)was the voice of radio advertisements for many companies, including Tweeter, Wayland Golf, J.C. Hillary's, and NESN.

Mr. Welch has written and published a memoir, "Copywriter," which is excerpted on his website, www.raywelch.com.
Also on the site are radio commercials he recorded...

The obit said he was addicted to Lucky Strike cigarettes.
Welch died of cancer. Lung ?
What was "Lucky" about them.
I am sure he could have attained the same degree of success without them.
Still, a loss when 68 is no longer considered old.

I forgot to include the link to the newspaper obit on Mr. Welch in my original post...here it is.

The only brand of smokes I noticed in the obit was a reference to (unfiltered) Camels.
(Not a whole lot of difference between the two, IMHO.)
Be it lung cancer that was his form of the malady, it's not so stated.

Oh, and thank you casablanca for your observation about "68" is no longer considered being "old"...!

Well, I hope to resemble that age some time in the future...

I saw the obit the other day, but couldn't place the name.

Having some time to kill today (bored opping..zzzzzz..) I checked out the his website.

It was one of those OMG moments... everyone would instantly know who this guy was if they heard the voice.

(I'm back there was 5 seconds of dead air)

Ever see an actor in a TV show, guy is on all the time, always has work, but you don't know who he is? The supporting actor type? I guess voice over people can be like that too. Everyone knows their voices, but very few know their names. Now I know the name of one of the most prominent voice guys in the market. It was Ray Welch.

I loved his radio spots. I was told that he started doing them when the voice over guy he hired for a spot cancelled and he read the spot and the client loved the read.

I have become addicted to the Internet Movie data base I am alwys looking up character actors to see where I have seen them before.

I think many of us who grew up on radio listening to Ray's work will MISS him!

With regards to the Casablanca comment about 68 NOT BEING OLD...this has always been the beauty of radio over television.....

NO PICTURES!

Any good (or great) voice artist can make a wonderful sound impression and the audience isn't exposed to the wrinkles he (or she) has! ;)
