Obit: Sophie B. Altman at 95: Started quiz show, “It’s Academic”

The following is a truncated excerpt from the N.Y. Times obit on Ms. Altman:

“It’s Academic” became the world’s longest-running quiz show...The show’s name came from the couple’s oldest child, Susan. “Why don’t we call it ‘It’s Academic,’ ” she suggested, “as in ‘it’s academic, we don’t have a TV.’ ” Her entree into television came through her acquaintance with Lawrence E. Spivak, the original producer and later the moderator of “Meet the Press.” She assisted in producing that program.

The last sentence reminds me of something I was told about how one gets into most any business, but especially broadcasting...sometimes it's not only what you know, but who you know.

Here are a couple of other interesting links regarding the "It's Academic" program.
