Hudson Valley Odd Sunrise Broadcasting Morning Show Simulcast on 98.9 WGNY-FM 103.1 WJGK

I heard WGNY-FM promoting their morning show on 98.9 WGNY-FM & WJGK 103.1 last week. I thought that was weird since the stations have different formats. I got to listen briefly this morning, and sure enough they were the same. It was the end of the show and what I heard didn't have any jocks, but I only had the last few minutes. They both reverted to separate programing after 10AM. Is this another unexplainable Sunrise broadcasting attempt to save a few bucks? It is very odd they would do that in the morning driving time.

What did this station do to you? Obviously you want to rip them a new one.

A common morning show is frequently done in small markets quite successfully and is certainly a positive compared to taking a syndicated show or doing a jukebox in AM drive.

They didn't do anything to me. I listen to WGNY-FM frequently. I just find it odd they simulcast an oldies station's morning show on an adult contemporary station. I don't listen to WJGK. Sunrise Broadcasting does make some odd choices that's all. I am not angry about it . It's their business . I don't know how many AC listeners will like the change.

ive seen stations do this when theres a bit of overlap with a few signals and while the formats are a bit different.. they find some middle ground, play a bit of both... and you save a little bit of money.. and can cross promote each station

There is quite a bit of overlap. WJGK is licensed to Newburg NY, and WGNY to Rosendale, about 25-30 miles north. In between both stations are strong. Perhaps 10 miles north of Rosendale WJGK (the station that is out of format) has a sharp cutoff because of co-channel 103.1 WGY-FM Albany. Both stations are out of the same building. WGNY has a translator filling in weak areas in Newburg. They lose a revenue source during prime drive time. But whatever it's not my money. I had never heard this before on 2 stations with different formats covering much of the same area.

I really doubt they're losing mony on this. Two overlapping stations likely are sold in combo. Likely same money, half the expense.

One market I worked our AM was country and the FM Top 40. We had a common morning show. Sales sold both stations ($14 for both or $10.50 for 1 and nobody only bought one station). Then again we relied mostly only local sales although the agencies I deal with typically bought the combo.

Doubt theyre losing money, in fact.. probably making more through better billing and less expenses

Its like the concrete company NW of these stations who own several signals and i think at some point in history, theyve simulcasted some content despite differing formats

Its likely a good thing you dont run a station.

That was uncalled for. I realize that broadcasting is like any business, the main objective is to make money. My question is how the listeners of AC 103.1 WJGK will react. Will they accept four hours of oldies and if the stations mix it up with both formats will anyone be happy? If people tune out it will be difficult to sell spots let alone double the rates for being on two frequencies. This is new, it just started a week or two ago. So, it is imposable to know if it will work. I see you are working in more rural areas, this market is not. It is north of NYC. The radio band is more crowded, with more choices for the same basic format. To my knowledge this is unprecedented in this area.

Questions: So we have a far better idea of what they’re doing, can you please give us a number of how many songs they play per hour. Better yet, can you give a sample hour of music - title and artist. Hoping that will give us a better idea regarding your objections to the simulcast.
