Don't put all the blame on L&T. Yes, their big contract probably did them in because ROI had dropped, but the real killer in that battle was the GM's resistence to lighten the huge spot load on Planet. It took months and big share drops before that happened, and by then, in listener minds, Planet was the station playing too many commercials because it had been beat into their heads.
I think L&T will get back into the top 5 25-54 quickly if people can find the AM dial. Guess we will see but I think it's a great move for a sports station to add a male targeted show

It was not my intent to throw Lex and Terry under the bus to explain Planet’s demise. What I may like personally doesn't come into the equasion either. But I agree - there were issues with Planet and that's what invited competition. However, I do stand by my opinion but perhaps some clarification is in order. Before X102.9 came on the scene, even with great ratings over at Planet, I considered Lex and Terry’s new home after Rock 105 NOT THE BEST FIT. I expressed that view numerous times on these boards but I was going beyond what was then the present.
Later on when X102.9 dominated the ratings, I repeated the message that Planet’s typical listeners may have felt they were hearing what amounted to two of their dads on the radio. Perhaps some of you can recall those comments when we discussed ratings. That was back in August 2009 and for probably the second or even third time, I through out the suggestion that the better fit would be on CC’s sports station turning into a guy talk kind of thing. Perhaps a portion of Planet's morning show was just waiting for the music to start and didn't have that bond with L&T. I believe that is what happened when they did finally have a place to go.
At any rate, I find the business of radio very fascinating but perhaps it’s just my nature but I like to think of tomorrow a lot. If there is anything I’ve learned about many radio execs it’s that they just focus a lot on today. Funny thing about tomorrow is that it does eventually become today and I'd like to see a little more prep there. I do see 1010XL as a better fit for Lex and Terry and for their fans, I'm sure they're happy they are back "home."

You make a compelling argument about sports content on a sports radio station during morning dirve. However, consider the years of success Imus had with his non-sports content morning show on sports radio WFAN New York. We may soon discover that Lex and Terry are a good fit for sports radio 1010XL. If not, then I'm sure management will make the necessary changes or adjustments to bring the morning show content to be more in line with the overall station sports format.

The Gospel station WZAZ almost out performs 1010XL. Good luck Givers...
Why add a male type show to a sports station....uhhhh, new and additional cume which translates to higher ratings. Back in diary days, it was the same reason you put an all talk morning show on a music station....bring in new bodies and hopefully get them to come back for another visit in middays and afternoons. Sports traditionally is a low cume, high TSL format with kinda crappy numbers but a huge power ratio for sales (there are a few that kick butt but not many are higher than a 3 share). I'd expect new advertisers to appear on XL soon because of the relationships in the market with L&T and because the numbers will probably be higher. I am a big fan of the show "Free Beer and Hot Wings", which is a new rock talk show.....funny and a bit smarter....someone should smarten up and add that to a sports station mix, instead of the same low rated Mike and Mike type shows.
Sports stations that are successful are less stats and sports than sports entertainment. Hate to say it - Drunk B**ch Fridays are a lot more compelling than listening to guys discuss whether the Jags should draft a cornerback or how Brantley is doing in Weis's offensive. If XL is smart, they will load L&T with lots of sports features and updates so sports is still a big part of the recipe in the am. L&T talk sports more than most shows, so it's not a bad fit. There is plenty of time in the day to discuss sports and stats, Gators and Jags, golf or whatever......

Although there are small markets listed on the affiliation list, I would hardly call Jacksonville (even if this one is ONLY a 50kw mid dial position AM), West Palm Beach and Gainesville small markets as these markets are Top 50, 50 and 100 respectively. Granted L&T are not currently in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta; However, they don't have to be in either of these markets to qualify as successful, and success, defined as good ratings and good ad revenues when starting out small, is all that matters. Also, rarely will you find a syndicated morning show in any major market unless the syndicated show in question originates from one of the major markets.
Lastly, a small market list is much better than no list at all. They are literally starting over and oftentimes starting over means starting small and building large success over time from small successes. When all the variables are considered, I'd say this "small" market list is quite impressive and, as you said, "cute".

What's so cute or impressive about being in a large market like Jax but on an AM station nobody listens to? The Gospel station outperforms 1010.

When I was in programming, I knew only the programming side. When I moved to sales and eventually management and station ownership, the real education began.
