Official now - David Lee Roth replaces Stern on East Coast

Well, the not well kept rumor is now confirmed. It was on most of the TV news outlets this morning (Tuesday 10-11-05). hey, if it was on TV it MUST be true...

David Lee Roth will be replacing Howard Stern in the East. I assume that WBCN will use Roth in the morning. In hindsight Roth's week on WZLX just might have been an excuse to get feedback on Roth from the Boston audience in preparation for Stern's jump to satellite.

What I heard of him in Boston was OK but not stellar. Lots of bleeps and edits. It sounded like he was doing a national rather than a local show. He called Reading MA "Reeding" for instance. He made all phone callers explain any local references as if listeners were not from around here (or an air check was being prepared for those not from Boston).

It will be interesting to see (hear) how he'll do on WBCN if BCN puts him on.

I really hope that BCN goes with a local show and not DLR.. Why not bring Nik Carter in to do mornings. Make mornings music intensive, why is that so hard. What does DLR bring to the table?

I am probably the biggest DLR fan on this board. I love everything he's done musically. Including the Vegas trips and bad mid 90's CDs.

That being said...Dave is just not very good on the radio. He's a great guest. A great interview. But, as a host. Not so much.

What Dave does is incredibly scripted. He's not an "on the fly" thinker. Now I get it...some stuff can be scripted in radio, but the fact is...Dave resorts to "isms". He has stock lines that he uses in response to situations that require some kind of stream-of-consciousness.

I love the idea of DLR on the radio...except I've heard it.

Good Luck if that's what 'BCN gets handed them from corporate.

> That being said...Dave is just not very good on the radio.

When he did his brief stint in Boston as a fill-in, it was great to listen to on streaming, since they didn't bleep out the anything.

Sounds like a way for Infinity to continue to avoid paying live morning drive hosts on the stations that ran Howard.

Though I wasn't a Howard fan personally, I recognize that he was extremely talented and sucessful at what he did. He opened up, if not created, the style of "shock jock", and he did it with more class and professionalism than any of his imitators. His immense popularity was also a cash cow for Infinity, and he built it all with his on-air work, not by having been previously known as a singer or anything else.

Roth is a well-known name and celebrity, but I don't see his on-air performance commanding anywhere near the audience shares nationally that Howard garnered. If the week I heard of Roth on 'ZLX was any indication, he doesn't have it for this job. Perhaps they can try to shore him up with all kinds of scripts, features, co-producers, co-hosts, guests, etc... but I'm guessing that after some initial curiosity, it may fall flat like a lead balloon (not even a Led Zeppelin).

Re: Official now - David Lee Roth replaces Stern on East Coast - Not in Hartford

DLR, won't be on in Hartford. WCCC will be having a local show. It will be Sebastian, who did mornings on WCCC before they picked up the Howard Stern Show. After getting canned from WCCC he did a stint at 93-7 The 70s Station in Hartford and at AM 640 the Zone in Springfield.

I think they're aiming at GenXers(30-44) demo. Smart move on Hollander's part.
That whole demo grew up on VH and Diamond Dave back in the late 70's and 80s thanks to radio and MTV. Musically, WBCN and WXRK have already transitioned to playing GenXer rock and are locked in on this demo. Having GenXer icon like DLR host a syndicated show for them is not a problem. I don't see why everyone is so against Dave. He'll do well and be less expensive than Stern and more
entertaining than Dale Dorman, Matty or Wally and Loren.

My desire to hear David Lee Roth goes as far as his solo hit "Just Like Paradise". That's a song I really like. But my interest in hearing David Lee Roth on the radio goes no further then that. I have Zero interest in hearing Diamond Dave host a radio show. I could name 100 people who I think would be better for the job. I have no clue why Infinity would go with Roth. There appears to be absolutely no redeeming value in giving him a show. It's going to be tough enough to hold onto post Stern listeners as it is without needing to make it worse by hiring such an undesirable. What a Bad move this is. I won't be listening. I don't even have a curiosity factor for this one. Once Stern is gone then so am I.

Better than Matty, Dale, or Lorne and Wally?

Now i'm willing to give DLR a chance and see how he does. However, let's be serious here...

Matty has been at it for over 20 yrs and consistently is #1 in the 18-34yo female demo...

Dale Dorman is a Boston institution, who while he has advanced in years, still has been an example for many learning how to do radio the right way...and he is a rock and roll hall of famer...

Loren and Wally are so popular that the city a few years ago gave them their own day...they've been able to last through who knows how many format changes, and their "best ofs" seemed to be aired cosntantly...

The point is, if any of those morning shows aren't your style, that's fine...this does not make them bad morning shows...

Pssst. I'm in the demo. I know EVERY word Dave's gonna say. Because I've seen every show, heard every story. Multiple times. I love Dave. But, he's just not a radio guy. Maybe the greatest guest you can ask for, but not a great host.

>I don't see why everyone is so against Dave.

I'm not against him. I've heard him. I hope he's great, but know he's not.

Here's a game we can all play. Search the net for the David Lee Roth quote board.

See how long it takes to check them all off after he starts.

My bet is just about every quote by Memorial Day.

i beg to differ. you can't judge it on that wzlx gig. no celebrity guests. no strippers. no midgets. no farters. give the guy some good material to work with and he'll run with it. you'll see. hey, they gave RuPaul a radio show at one time, didn't they?! and that guy/girl was pretty entertaining and successful for a few years in nyc. i can't see why diamond dave can't succeed if given all the tools to put out a good morning show.

I wholeheartedly agree. I've loved listening to Stern since his WNBC days. I'd hope BCN could somehow find this generation's Charles Laquidara instead. Stern is a one-of-a-kind, and BCN should go back to a local morning host.

David Lee Stern & Howard Roth

oh what dumb moves Joel Hollander has Roth...I mean, wrought...or maybe they mean...radio rot.

revolting.

Sammy Lee Hagar was much more fun in Van Hollander.

David Lee makes me Yawwwwwn. Not good with morning coffee.

Another vote against DLR

Yes, it was funny because they were *trying* to bleep him, but they missed almost every F bomb. Which made it even funnier.

If they did stream it was so that those outside of the market say in New York (Hollander et al) could hear and evaluate. ZLX streaming was a one time thing in that case.

It might be best to wait until January before passing judgement. This reminds me of the furor that DC comic geeks raised over Michael Keaton being cast as "Batman" in Tim BUrton's movie but he turned out to be the best of the Movie Batmen, Roth while an unconventional pick could turn out to surprise all. Part of the problem when he auditioned on ZLX was that there was no one to steer the ship, Hutch is no presence and could not add much to the mix more than "Yeah Dave".

Get him a solid producer who books better than B list guests, and dont let him drone on for hours about Van Halen past the first six months he's there and then who knows?. He could shock the world. I doubt he will but one thing is for certain EVERYONE will be listening whod oesnt have sirius.
