Ohio Lottery, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! leaving WEWS

Starting July 1, Ohio Lottery 7:29pm drawings and Cash Explosion game show will move to WKYC Channel 3.

Then, in fall 2012, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! will both move to WOIO Channel 19.

With those two moves, along with losing Oprah, WEWS Channel 5 is going through a lot of changes lately.

Wow. Long time viewing habits will greatly be affected. Between 4-8, WEWS has had the same lineup since 1986 when Oprah started.

Add on top of that, Regis retiring from "Live!", and on the network side "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" being axed, what had been a 20+ year, stable, solid as a rock day time/early evening schedule for channel 5 has gone ka-blooey almost in one fell swoop.

WEWS lost Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! because Scripps went into cost-cutting mode. They are dropping them across the entire chain (IIRC, this affects WEWS' sister stations in Cincy, Phoenix, Tampa and Baltimore... WXYZ/Detroit never aired either show.)

It's a massive boon for WOIO... whose only real weak point would be the "CBS Evening News," which is naturally allergic to ratings.

As for the Ohio Lotto... how long did WEWS serve as the flagship? I presume they were the first upon the lotto's founding in the mid-1970s.

You are correct, sir.

TV 5 is (until July 1) the only station to carry the Ohio Lottery in Cleveland, and they've been there since the start.

Don Webster and the late, great Gib Shanley were the original hosts (alternating). They would host the drawings for "The Number" (which would become "Pick 3") and would pick the numbers out of an old school bingo machine.

Not to mention both All My Children and One Life to Live being axed by ABC...

Those soaps are going to be replaced by new lifestyle shows called "The Chew" and "The Revelation." I bet they won't last. Plus, Katie Couric is going to have a new syndicated talk show next fall, which is already cleared on eight ABC O&Os across the country. No word if it will air locally on WEWS or another station or not at all here.

Plus, I'm sure Wheel and Jeopardy! will help boost the syndicated lineup at WOIO and WUAB. They really need it.

It's possible that Couric's show could replace whichever of ABC's two talk entries fails first. Not a bad insurance policy (and if both beat the odds and do well, then Disney/ABC can syndicate the Couric show instead).

The plan for Fall 2012 is to give the 3 p.m. hour back to the affiliates.

Which means either "General Hospital" will be canceled outright (leaving ABC with no soap operas at all), or "GH" will replace one of the talk shows at 1 or 2 p.m. should they flop.

The Katie Couric Show will be syndicated, and distributed by ABC.

The ABC O&Os have already signed Katie up for 3 p.m. in '12

There's no guarentee WEWS will have Couric at 3 p.m.

Is there a good shot?

Yes, but no slam dunk.

Additionally, the Ohio Lottery drawings and Cash Explosion have moved from WTOL 11 to WTVG 13 ABC in Toledo, and from WHIO Channel 7 to WKEF ABC 22 and WRGT Fox 45 in Dayton.
