For many years, WWMG-FM Magic 96.1 was a 100,000 watt Oldies powerhouse. Cheap Channel killed that when they bought Magic 96 around 2000. They quickly ran it into the ground. Now, WTHZ-FM Majic 94.1 (100,000 watts out of Lexington, NC) has emerged and in recent weeks they are sounding alot like the old Majic 96.1. Their signal can be clearly in most places in this market. They are doing the reverb with the d.j.`s (VERY COOL!) that Magic 96.1 did for many years. They are now playing a very large playlist of mostly 60`s Oldies. I think that they sound fantastic. I really think that alot of listeners around here are thinking that they are the old Magic 96.1 reborn. Actually, they are in the sense that their playlist and d.j.`s sound like Magic 96.1 did in its` prime.

What does their imaging sound like? What jingle package? Whose voice on the sweepers?

Hmmm, Charlotte is outside the Old Gringo-approved "red circle"
(www.radio-locator.com) so it's probably hit-and-miss reception.

It appears the station is really targeting the Greensboro/W-S/
High Point market.

Mostly '60s? Isn't that against the grain, demo-wise?

This same post was on the Greensboro/Raleigh board. The poster appears to be someone in management at 94.1. The post is way too self-serving to be an unbiased opinion. Since they can't afford any advertising, this was probably the best the owner could do. Kind of sad.

Any chance that the poster is actually a former Magic jock that was hired at this new station?

Glad to hear someone's giving WWMG's flavor another shot, no matter who's hawking it and how. Though I went and found their website and hit the listen live link and heard some 80's garbage. I'm glad WWMG didn't start with that until after I left town.

Third song = Sweet Home Alabama. Nice song, but the WWMG I remember wouldn't have played that.

I just went to their site and listened on line.
The first post here says that they are now "... playing a very large playlist of mostly 60`s Oldies." I lasted only through three songs, none were from the 60's, Maxine Nightingale "Get Right Back To Where We Started From", Steve Miller Band "Jet Airliner", and The Commodores "Sail On". Heard an imaging promo with clips of "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen and "Jump" by Van Halen in it and then "It's Raining Men" by The Weathergirls came on IN FULL, I had to turn it off.
I was in hopes of hearing something similar to Magic 96 with a lot of 60's songs, didn't hear any jingles. How do you get "MAGIC" out of "WTHZ"?

They still sound like Classic Hits/Rock to me. I heard "The Chain" from fleetwood mac on 94.1 Now that is not oldies..

That station still sucks - little listener involvement - strange weird music choices - still a Class C in Lexington trying to join the big boys

WTHZ is nothing like the old Magic 96.1. As others have said, it's more classic rock/ Hot AC, and has a very small market sound. Also, it has a very poor or nonexistant signal in the Charlotte area. All this will change when ownership of the station changes. They'll gain a slightly better signal, when they move to "Faith" NC and word is they'll become another "religious" station.

Wouldn't a True Odlies format work in Charlotte? I think before they switch to anything else they should try True OLDIES. That means removing the Classic Rock format they have now. :D

Also, when will they move to Faith,NC?

That True Oldies Format would probably do pretty good. I listen to it regularly on WLS on line and, even though it is automated and voice tracked, the right music list makes it what it is: Enjoyable for long periods of time.

I have not had the chance to listen to 94.1 since I last visited SC, but from what I remember it is no magic 96. Magic 96 was one of those special stations that you could relate to. No matter how old or how youing everybody knew the songs they played and the jocks that were apart of Magic made the station special no matter if it was The eddman, Boomer, or Night Train you could count on them being there no matter what time of day it was. The music was fun, the feel of the station was fun, and that was what set Magic apart from all other stations who have attempted to do oldies... I love oldies and try to play all those oldies that no one else touches on my oldies show that I do for my internet station... CC1

As far as sucking, I think that is pretty strong but you are certainly free to express your opinion. I just happen to disagree. Last time I listened, listener involvement included an all request lunch every day and Shark doing movie trivia in the afternoon, both with phones. From what I can tell this station has live local jocks all day long, not such a bad thing. Yes, they may have some strange, weird music choices but it certainly is refreshing to hear something other than over researched played out classic records over and over. WTHZ is small time and to me that is part of their charm. Just my opinion.

I heard a few tunes tonight from Mr. Shark that sounded good, like from Gallery and "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo" by Lobo. Then the overplayed classic rock mix started again with Pat Bennetar,BTO,Stones,Doors etc. I remember about a month or so ago Shark played a song from ACDC during the drive at 5pm. I thought I was listening to 99.7 the fox. I double checked, sure enough it was 94.1.

Also, what's up with the new jingles including sped up versions of songs from YES, Boston and even Zepplin?

Is a switch comming soon?

I always thought it was cool how a really good programmed oldies station, like KOMA, WLS-FM, or KRTH gave you that special feeling. 94.1 doesn't! They have no business playing AC/DC!

94.1 will NEVER be like Magic 96.

As someone else posted....94.1 is NOT a Charlotte station..... Go over to South Park and see if you can hear it.
As someone also posted ..... Most (not all) 1960's songs should be left out in favor of more 70's (and even some 80's)
And one more thing...Clear Channel didn't "kill" Magic 96, the advertisers were not buying ads because the audience was getting a bit old(er)

Having worked at both stations, Magic 96 was a much better presentation and from a engineering point of view, 94.1 will NEVER sound like 96.1 did with Gary Hataway tweaking the transmitter
