Oldies 103 flipping to Christmas music "very soon"

This morning, Sat the 12th, at about 815am, I heard an announcement on Oldies 103 that the station would be flipping to all Christmas music "very soon". No date was mentioned.

My guess is Monday morning, November 14th, at 530am with the morning show.

Oh, humbug. It's time for the Sirius preset("Sirius Gold", Channel 5). I see nothing wrong with a LITTLE holiday cheer. BUT..... 40 days of it? Come on!

What is this all-Christmas stint on many other stations trying to prove, anyway? What is the logic, if any? To me, it's real a turn-off. Last year I reset my 103.3 preset until the end of the Christmas marathon. Looks like a redux of last year, once again for me.

Same here. Once the holiday music started (and Oldies flipped well before Thanksgiving last year if I recall correctly), I didnt listen to Oldies again until sometime in early January.

Never fear 105.7 WROR is here

I replaced my Oldies 103 preset in the car with 105.7 WROR a long time ago. Oldies 103's music is already incredibly burned out. A little Christmas music every now and then is nice but not non-stop. I'm sure WROR will pick up all the Oldies 103 listeners who don't want to hear non-stop Christmas music for the next forty days. <P ID="signature">______________

HUMBUG!! it shouldn't start until after Thanksgiving at the earliest.

Attention Listeners - Get Satellite for Christmas!

Attention Listeners,

We want to encourage you to turn off Oldies 103.3 entirely. Since satellite radio is going to be pushed heavily this season, we're giving you the best reason of all to try it; we're going to drop the very reason you listen to us and play Christmas music. He're 40 days for you to change your habits permanently!

Cheers,
Oldies 103 who still thinks people have no other options.

---
At what point will they realize this isn't the best thing to do for 40 days?

Re: Attention Listeners - Get Satellite for Christmas!

See, here is something I dont think some people realize. Satellite brings nothing new to the table other than things that were made great on terrestrial radio. Howard Stern and Opie and Anthony. Other than that, Satellite's worst nightmare is the iPod.

Cable television brought new programming or reruns of beloved shows. Satellite is $10-$12 (not including hardware) of music without commercials. Otherwise, your iPod. And your iPod GUARANTEES YOU you wont hear a song that sucks.

XM and Sirius will not be profitable until they merge, and even then they are going to have trouble. Wait until a company brings INTERNET into your car, that provides internet radio, web capabilities, etc...and THEN you've got a terrestrial radio killer.

Satellite radio is not a threat. End of story. :)

Yeah, because nobody in Boston moved here from somewhere else and would be interested in hearing their favorite teams on the radio in the car. Nobody in this town wants to listen to dance music (despite what Entercom wants us to believe.) Nobody wants to hear Opie and Anthony. Who cares if they were "made great on terrestrial radio?" They're on satellite now, and people have followed them there.

I agree wholeheartedly with your stance on internet radio in cars, but to say that "satellite's not a threat" is baseless.

Re: Oldies 103 flip vs Satellite Oldies

My only experience with XM came this summer when I had it in a rent-a-car
for a full week. What I liked most was the great signal quality and the
fact that I had no problem staying with the channel of my choice no matter
where I traveled.
As I listened to the 60's channel most often, there were 3 things that would
probably keep me from spending money on satellite radio. 1) The variety was
not much better than my local FM outlet. 2) When they ran a specialty show,
in this case a Saturday morning of non-stop Aretha Franklin, I didn't have
an alternative source for 60's music. Granted I could go to the 50's or 70's, but why should I have to. And 3), for a non-"commercial" channel, if I'm
paying for it, XM spent way too much time promoting events not on the 60's
channel. It's OK if they want a "brief" announcement promo for an upcoming
oldies special, but I don't want a barrage of promos for the News Channels,
Sports Channels, etc.
This one week this past August has been my only experience with satellite.
Is this a typical description of how they program, or did I catch them on
a bad week? I may be a bit cynical here, and again I realize there's a lot
of channels to choose from, but I didn't get enough of what I wanted to make
me want to pay for it.

We recently got a XM radio in the restaurant where I work...and that's exactly how they program...at least on the 60's channel and Soul Street...lots of promos for Sports channel events...promos for specialty shows on other channels...etc. For what it is, it's great, but I don't think it's quite worth $11 a month.

Last year, they started the day after (or before?) Thanksgiving. My guess is then.

Wouldn't be surprised at all--they're the most likely to do so. Off goes the preset on my car radio; it's not that I don't like Christmas music, but
it's kinda early. Though those damn Overstock.com ads have already been back
for a couple weeks (HO! HO! HO! THE BIG, BIG, O! OVERSTOCK.COM!)_

"We're playing favorites...
North Shore 104.9!" (Except for those in Boston who get WRBB instead)

Unless WROR also goes all-Christmas, which I think there is zero chance of.

If any Greater Media station goes all-Christmas, it would be WMJX-106.7, since:

(1) Usually, it's Adult Contemporary or Soft Adult Contemporary stations (like WMJX) that go all-Christmas.

(2) That's because there is a great overlap in the "core" audiences of AC and all-Christmas formats.

(3) Last year, two other Greater Media AC stations went all-Christmas (Central New Jersey and Detroit). At least one of those two may go all-Christmas again; perhaps both (although in Detroit, AC rival WNIC went all-Christmas Novemebr 1st; had WMGC there decided to go all-Christmas again this year, they probably would have done so by now).

However, WMJX last year was one of the very few AC's that did not go all-Christmas. But between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, they were about 50% Christmas music.

There's another option for those who want to hear oldies: WCRN-830.

During the day, you should have no trouble hearing them anywhere in Eastern and Central Massachusetts. Although they cut their power at night to 5,000 watts, it's beamed right towards Boston, and I suspect that in most of the Boston area (unless you're using a "walkman"), you can also hear them at night. At my home in Norwood, I get a good signal from WCRN both day and night.

Be aware that they do run financial talk shows weekdays from 9 A.M. to 12 Noon.

Assuming that WODS-103.3 does go all-Christmas, I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least a major tweak in their format after Christmas.

At the very least, I think they may follow the example of KFRC San Francisco and with the exception of a few titles, drop 1960's and early 1970's hits for a 1970's/1980's oldies blend.

I also wouldn't be completely surprised if the station were flipped to "Jack". But were that to happen, they'd probably dump their airstaff now and run a jockless all-Christmas format.

"Free FM"? Not on 103.3.

If I had to guess, I'd say "oldies" will return to 103.3 after Christmas----but likely an oldies format that emphasizes the mid 1970's through the late 1980's with very few late 1960's/early 1970's titles, much like KFRC has done.

Alright everyone, start placing your bets.....Nov. 23rd.....

Only one problem with your theory. I was checking the stations who are 'all Christmas' on 100000watts.com and the majority of soft ac's going 'all holiday' are owned by Clear Channel.

Just because a station is soft or mainsteam AC does not mean it has to flip during the holiday season. WZID in Manchester did not either last year (WQLL did.) Both MJX and ZID are highly rated in those markets and probably don't want to gamble with a niche seasonal format.

WODS gets FAR better ratings in the Boston market than KFRC got as oldies in San Francisco. KFRC was floundering in that market. WODS is the second highest rated adult music station in the Boston market, and well within the top ten stations overall. KFRC wasn't (and still isn't as classic hits) within the top ten in San Francisco. I would think that with WODS's ratings, which have been trending up a bit lately, that they wouldn't fix what isn't broken, though stranger things have happened.
