Oldies 1620 and Other Oldies Questions and Memories

Hi South Central Pa,
I lived most of adult life in Philadelphia, but grew up in Shamokin Pa. I think that Oldies 1620 is a great fanastic oldies station. Is this just an internet station or can you receive the station on you radio if your dial goes up that far.
Back in the late 1980's did WOYK AM1350 have an oldies album. Some of some of the song were on the album were Lipstick Traces by the O'jays and Piece of Mind by the Mag Men. Did this album exist and if it did what were the rest of songs on the album, and were could I purchase one.
Here are some memories during the 1970's when my family would go down to Park City in Lancaster Shopping, I always would listen to WLAN 1390 and WKBO 1230.
In the early 1980's once in a while a take my girlfriend back in School in Carisle on a Sunday afternoon. I listened to WIOO AM 1000. That Sunday afternooon they had two syndicated shows: Soundtrack of the 60's with Gary Owens and Dick Clark's Rock, Roll and Remember.
In early 1984 on Friday afternoon WOYK AM 1350 had on Wolfman Jack's Graffti Gold. I thought it was an odd time for a show as this. A short time later the switched to the Big Band Nostalgic Format.
In Late 1987 I made a trip to York and discovered both WKBO AM 1230 and WCMB AM 1460 were both running satellite oldies formats.
Last in the late 80's did WLAN 1390 and WOYK 1350 switched to an oldies format.
Thank you for your time and listening to me.

Oldies Radio 1620 is a part 15 AM station in southern York County that serves a limited area. They are online worldwide at www.oldiesradio1620.com. I believe this is the future of Oldies on the radio. Commercial stations don't want to target older demographics at all....let alone program a wide playlist with "o wow songs". Oldies Radio 1620 plays songs I have not heard in years...and some that I almost forgot about. GREAT STATION....GREAT SOUNDING STREAM!

Great... this is an option for the "record collectors" in the audience. Although it is well programmed, there is a reason why oldies stations have moved forward to basically late 60s-early 80s. There is NOT A FUTURE for "oldies" on the radio. Nobody is interested in a 60 plus audience. Just the facts. Why do CBS-FM and OGL sound the way to do today? Simple answer---they want to stay in business.

Oldies Radio 1620 is basically an Internet station but yes, we do run a Part 15 transmitter which is audible in southern York County (Shrewsbury/New Freedom). We'll continue to offer a variety of Oldies from the 50's through the 70's, some songs you might remember or some that you may have never heard. We start the Million Dollar Weekend at 3 on Friday with a line up of syndicated shows that the other stations just don't want to carry! We just recently added Breakfast With The Beatles with Dennis Mitchel Sunday morning at 8, and have had Cool Bobby B on for over 2 years among others! Internet radio has a way to go but it'll grow as long as there is something to offer that the others don't.

Jimmy I think the album that you are thinking of is when 1350's calls were WZIX, I have seen an LP from them at a few of the Keystone Record Collectors shows. You might want to come to one of our shows, info is at www.recordcollectors.org. You may also try contacting The Record Connection in Ephrata, Tom's Music Exchange in Red Lion or IKO's in York as they also deal in vinyl pretty heavily. (And I can remember hearing the inital start up tests of WIOO Carlisle back in the 60's)

I am familiar with that album. Mike Leash would have been the
General Manager at WOYK at that time, I am sure he would
know how to get a copy of the album as I think he put the
project together. He also continues to run his Class of 60 something
Dances at the York Expo Center a couple of times a year.
I am sure he could help you on on this.

Dave, I remember the start up of WIOO also. Spent time at the old studio on the second floor of West High St. The board was home built with 3 or 4 channels if I remember correctly. The production room was a small room facing the studio. All production was run to a reel to reel in the studio rack. I think a guy by the name of George Jennings helped build and get the station on the air. Remember Bob Hamilton as PD

Billy G.

Jimmy I have FOUND the oldies album put out by WOYK "Doc Daugherty & Dave Bupp Remember" and Oldies Radio 1620 has 5 of the songs on the LP in its regular rotation! If you might be interested in a CD of it, let me know at [email protected].
