Oldies 950..."Greatest Hits of the 50's and 60's-and more!

I happened to be tuned in to Oldies 950 Friday evening and they played "Hooked on a Feeling" by BJ Thomas. I could've sworn that was a 70's tune. :)

Checked several websites that say it was released in 1968 & charted to #5.
That WPEN slogan stands as is.

Now, if you want to question a WPEN slogan, how about that Art Andrews news tag (that was discussed here before) that WPEN is "Philadelphia's fastest growng radio station..."

"Hooked On A Feeling" by Billy Joe (BJ) Thomas was played for the first time on radio on WJDX, Jackson, Mississippi, 15 October, 1968. DJ Mark Scott (7p-Midnight) hosted BJ and his agent in the studio and BJ brought along an acetate copy of the song that he had just recorded that very day.

Mark played it. Phones went wild, Mark re-played it and re-played it about five more times in the next two hours. Hit status was assured.

Reason I know this? Mark Scott was a consultant to our station in the late '80s when I started in the biz. I bought that very acetate from Mark, signed with a black sharpie by BJ Thomas, notated and dated as the very first time that that tune was ever played on radio. I had it framed, with a signed photo of Mark and BJ taken that very night in the studio.

It remains one of the most cherished items in my radio collection.

Re: WPEN philly's fastest growing radio station

I believe I've heard a similar tag used on NewsTalk 990 WNTP. Something about them being Philly's fastest growing talk station.

Yeah, and the CIA authorizes a "hit" with the phrase "terminate with extreme prejudice." Words...just words.

I can understand your mistake. Some oldies stations that play almost only seventies songs like to throw that one in as well.

I've heard "Morse Code of Love" on WPEN - a 1981 "doo-wop" classic! I'm sure some '70's music gets played (does Blavat still play mid-70's disco on his shows like he used to?) but the focus is on '50's & '60's when they are in format weekdays.

Considering that BJ sang "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" in the mid sixties and "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" in the mid seventies, and that "Hooked" was a #1 hit for Blue Swede as a remake in 1974, I don't blame you. :)
