Oldies returns to the Fayetteville-Lumberton market

I know they hired one poor guy to come there from Lenoir and then promptly ditched him for a syndicated show.

Yeah - but when you are doing country on a stick 30 miles outside the area...it's very hard to compete with WKML. Matter of fact - WFVL didn't even show in the ratings this last time around.

All of the staff remains...with the exception of the afternoon drive dude. Also - we are taking the Tom Kent Syndicated night show.

TK Tom Kent, awesome show! "Broadcasting from my basement in Cleveland...." Be sure to get his '70s show as well. And be sure to serve the upper core with Mike Harvey or Little Walter's Time Machine.
Machine Gun Kelly's American Hit List...IMO...not a good show.

I believe you may be talking about my friend and broadcasting brother L.A. Freeman, who went to Fayetteville from Lenoir's WKVS. I sent him an e-mail to let him know he's become a discussion topic here. I think he can provide more details. Kicks 103.3 is the one Lenoir radio station I didn't work for. I worked for WKGX, 1978-1979, and WJRI for more years than I can remember, starting in November, 1980. Those were some fun times in radio. L.A and I worked togther at WXRC, Hickory, in 1986-1987, when it was something resembling an album rock station. All this happened in an era when radio was fun.

Some excellent radio people were on the staff of Channel One during its existance. L.A. is definitely among them. All of my experience in Hickory radio was at WIRC-WXRC, in 1977 and again as chief engineer and overnights on air from late 1986 through 1987.

So whatever happened to Greg Mull who took WXRC to Charlotte in the 1980s? Last I heard, he was in Florida.
I still have my "I'm X Rated" t-shirt from the early 1980s. I'd love to hear some of the old jingles from its heyday as a CHR in the early 1980s (when it was tape automated).

Now, here is the official factual response on this issue sent to me by the man who knows all about it, L.A.Freeman, which I am posting unedited and cleared for broadcast.
Yes, I was the "some poor dude from Lenoir", but I was NOT ditched after a
couple of months to be replaced by a syndicated morning show (Rick and
Bubba). I came in on the start up of KIX 106.9 as part of the morning show
with Tracy Taylor. We had the potential for damn good morning show but like
mentioned in your thread, the stick was thirty miles away, we didn't cover
the market thoroughly and after all it WAS Cumulus. The succession of
format changes and personnel over the last two years should give you an
indication that it was an uphill battle.
But to clear the air....I left after nine months because I was too far away
from my kids and didn't get to see them enough...AND my morning partner was
extemely difficult to work with. I've spent too many years in this business
to have my day to day work environment resemble an episode of The
Apprentice. I went from helping create the number one moring radio show in
the Hickory metro market to fighting all the hassles that arise in corporte
radio. I decided that my mental health was far more important than fighting
a battle that couldn't be won. Thanks for your interest.
BTW...all is wonderful now...I've got a steady stream of imaging and
production that I create from my digtial home studio, and all without
someone looking over my shoulder or breathing down my neck...its a beautiful
thing.

Darn it! Well, at least my folks don't stay up there anymore. I enjoyed listening to 102.3 WFNC the times I stayed up in St. Pauls during my vacations from down here in the radio purgatory known as Tampa.
