OMW: Karmazin's Good Karma buying/LMA-ing WKNR

Thank God Roger left the Pee-Dee in this case. His defense of the WGPD (tm) there - and by Mickey's own words - would have been the greatest embaressment that paper's ever seen.

The only reason that WKNR's audio is so grainy, dull and hideous has never been the tx - only in operation since 1999(!) It's obviously come from the studios, which have no doubt been neglected and probably haven't been seriously re-wired or whatnot since Cablevision renoved what was until then studios for 1220 and 99.5 back in 1991. Moving to the Galleria in (no doubt) state-of-the-art digs will do wonders for the station's sound.

Oddly (and sadly) enough, GK may end up becoming a major tenant of the mall. It's in the best possible location, but is so empty instead. And - out of curiousity - I'd like to at least see the Broadview Road studios before they leave (though that may take a few months)...

Nate?

Remember the old board long ago, where at least three or four of us were "programming on a napkin" the lineup of a station once thought to be entering the market - WWVA/1170 - as a sports talk station?

Looks like we've got the napkin out again, though some of this may have a reasonable shot of happening!

Heh. :)

Oh, yeah. I remember that thread (maybe we should resurrect the "Build Your Own Sports Station" topic). :D

It's gonna finally be fun at the mighty 850... I can't wait!

>>Look at WEEI in Boston, they have PBP now but when they started their dominance they didn't have any

Actually WEEI will be ceding the Red Sox to sister station WRKO starting this year and WRKO also has the
Celtics. There is some play by play on WEEI--Revolution soccer, Monday Night Football, and some
college action--though.

At least the Red Sox are staying in the Entercom family (but apparently at a very steep price... WRKO just tanked their entire news team due to "budget constraints," or buyer's remorse... you pick...)

The rights nearly went to Greater Media, which DIDN'T have a sports station, but was rumored to upstart an FM sports talker CO-OWNED WITH THE SOX (!!!) on what is currently an alt/rocker. This would have led to THREE all-sports stations in Boston, including WEEI and the ESPN trimulcaster...

WEEI also simulcasts their programming on three different stations (IIRC, 2 AM and an FM) throughout the interior of Massachuttes. Even though it's 50KW, it's with a signal that's as directional as WKNR's, though at least it's a full-time 50KW.

6. Polished DJ voices don't belong on Sports Radio. Let them introduce the songs. Guys like Arnie Spanier and JT the Brick would only work on Sports Radio, and when the host is good enough and passionate enough to hook the listener the voice doesn't matter.

LOL! I'll assume you were being snarky when you were praising human grease stains like Arnie Spanier and J.T. the Brick.

In fact, I'm sure you'll agree that neither man deserves any of the success they've had in radio and both need to be blackballed out of radio. Of course, both guys get annihilated in the nationals by John Sybal, Doug Gottlieb, and Freddie "The Cooler" Coleman on ESPN Radio so I shouldn't have to worry about their futures in the long-term.

Spanier, Brick, Roda, and Drennen represent everything that is wrong with sports talk radio today, much like how Rover and O&A represent everything wrong with FM talk.

At least Bruce is going to jail, so he's getting what he deserves. Here's hoping Roda gets pulled over with a transvestite prostitute or something one day soon.

>>THREE all-sports stations

actually it would have been four had the GM deal gone through:
>WBOS GM/Sox partnership
>WEEI (Fox Sports overnights)
>WAMG & WLLH (ESPN exc. for one local show)
>WWZN (Sporting news radio)

WEEI simulcasts are on an AM in Worcester, an FM in Westerly RI, and now an FM in Easthampton (nr.
Springfield) MA

Aye, I forgot about WWZN - though it would be hard NOT to forget that troubled station. They were forced to eliminate all local programming last year, and their future rests in the balance of SNR's new (and/or future?) ownership. That's sad, considering "The Zone" was the Celtics' flagship just two years ago...

Nice stick they have there, though. If you've been looking for a station in Boston and have some much unneeded money for Paul Allen...

Of note:

When I saw the name "Karmazin" in the title I assumed it was Mel, the former CBS boss notorious for harboring a certain "shock jock" who shall remain nameless at Infinity Broadcasting, as well as contesting the indecency fines surrounding the Super Bowl halftime show with Janet Jackson a couple of years back.

Is Craig of any relation?

Craig is Mel's Son
