On NFL games, do he networks sometimes switch games because of blowouts?

Like last Sunday, Fox switched many areas to the Panthers-Jets game, because the Bears-Eagles game was a blowout. Does this happen often?

It's always a possibility, except for the blowout teams' home markets. If you have Sunday Ticket, it can take a few minutes for the switched-out game to be available again, on one of the "700" channels. The networks are interested in keeping viewers, not boring them to death, so they switch to a better game when they can. In the case of Chicago, they were SOL. Philly viewers, of course, were enjoying it.

depends on the score. If a team is up by at least 18 points the network **could** switch out. Now note there is only one game per timeslot/network that is the "switchout" game. As example this was last weeks
The Fox Switchable Game is CHI/PHI. CBS is MIA-NE and likely BUF-KC with very much obviously NO/LAR late.

The NY Times had an article recently about who gets what
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/19/...-in-mississippi-have-to-watch-the-giants.html

I saw it on CBS two weeks ago, when the Bengals-Broncos game got close, they left the Patriots-Raiders game to go to the Bengals-Broncos game.

This weekend, enjoying the Eagles game as I don’t get to see them often,,, then all of a sudden Im watching the Jets. THAT SUCKS. I was watching the Eagles,,, they switched games, I switched channels.

yup same reason. To show a "more competitive game"

btw: Minneapolis did not leave the Philly/Chicago game until it was over. I guess because Vikes & Bears are same division they kept us with that game.
note in the article I linked above you'll see there are "constant feeds" of some games. Basically they cant leave the game, no matter the score, until its over.
One other thing is a mandatory pullout. That is areas where the area will get the whole late game. So lets say Minnesota has the late FOX game at 3:25 and the Packer game was on at noon and is running late. At 3:20-3:22 (it varies) FOX Minneapolis leaves the game, no matter what is going on, to get ready for the Vikings game so we could see the kickoff.

Baltimore was switched from CHI/PHI to CAR/NYJ. But aren't Baltimore and Washington secondary markets of each other? Or more to the point, isn't Baltimore a secondary market of Philadelphia's fellow NFC East market DC? (The Redskins' week 12 game was on Thanksgiving so the burgundy and gold couldn't have been a factor in switching Baltimore, and neither could the purple birds because they played on MNF.)

upon further review apparently they are NOT secondary markets of each other

Week 11
Baltimore was at Green Bay on the early game on CBS (CBS had the DH)
Washington was at Nawlins on the early game on FOX

If both were secondary markets of each other Both markets would have an early game as ALL road games MUST be televised.
Washington CBS DID carry Baltimore game but Baltimore went with the late FOX game of Buffalo @ LA Chargers.

Home markets are defined by the NFL. All home market games are shown in their entirety from beginning to end. In other words, if Seattle is blowing out San Francisco 48-7, the game will be shown till the end in the home market. They also will start games at the beginning despite other games that may have not ended. This is contractual, not anything to do with local stations or networks.

correct. Hence the name "Primary market". And it was already mentioned previously

Only I think that WAS SUPPOSED to work THE OTHER WAY AROUND (Which it LOOKED like might happen ON PAPER)

Is there a rule that Fox(or CBS) must show a home team's game in full, even if the early game isn't over? was thinking if Fox had to do that today with the Bucs/Packers game, or did that end before the late games began?

It's happened with college football, because one time Clemson was playing somebody on ABC, and the game such a blowout, that ABC switched to a Pac-10 game(underestimating the fact that WLOS/13's coverage area goes into parts of the Upstate). The station got many complaints that ABC decided that WLOS should get a constant feed for Clemson games from then on.

yes. If you read some posts in this thread you would have already had the answer. The local teams and usually neighboring markets show the game in its entirity

ended before the late game began

Fox never leaves a game when the Lions get blown out which isn't much anymore like it was a decade ago. About a decade ago Fox17 would switch the game if the Lions had the late game but stopped doing that in 2010 or 2011 I remember the Lions were on the road VS the Bears missed all of the 1ST quarter because Falcons VS Saints went into OT last year for London game that ended in a tie wasn't until the second quarter until Lions VS Texans. So I don't like when games run over when the Lions are on I want to watch the Lions not the game that is on Fox17 should get the Lions full game since that is the home team it's not fair and isn't right.

Same thing here. WHNS/21 will switch to the Carolina Panthers game if it's the second half of the doubleheader like last year when the London game went into overtime and ended in a tie. But i remember one time when the Atlanta Falcons game at Tampa Bay was supposed to start, but Fox kept us on Detroit at Minnesota, which went to overtime. It wasn't our assigned game, it was bonus coverage. They did the same thing when the Washington Redskins were playing a west coast game, Fox stuck with Seattle at Houston for much of the 1st quarter, and it was bonus coverage. CBS does that too.

I once saw a Packers game get switched for Detroit at Arizona a few years ago.

Whats your point? Unless you are in a Primary market (home market of said team), a secondary market (where all road games must air), or a neighboring market (one that is not a secondary market but shows the closest local team as much as they can) you might get moved from a game to a different game.

I do know that in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania market area must show all Ravens road games(unless one of them are switched to Fox), even though the Steelers have a pretty big fanbase. Same thing in Erie, they must broadcast all Bills away games for the same reason.
