On The Non-Commercial Front: After Years Of Attempts, CPR Buys KUOP

Radio&Records.com reports Cal State University, KXPR/KXJZ's licensee, purchased 7kw 91.3, KUOP, Stockton from University Of The Pacific for $4.7 million, $4 million in cash.

KUOP has been simulcasting the KXJZ signal for years, with virtually no localism from the Stockton area since early this decade. The old CPR President desperately wanted this years ago, and told me he had made numerous bids....but under the current economic conditions???

$4 million + for a 7kw, when CSU says it needs more funding for dozens of projects directly affecting school business? For a station it already has programmed 24/7 for about a decade?

It's an FCC equivalent of a Class B (50kw at HATT 492 feet). KUOP is 7kw with a HAAT 1220 fet.

Capital Public Radio and UOP agreed to the sale a year ago. They just finally got around finalizing the deal. Even though Capital Public Radio is an auxiliary unit of CSUS, it's essentially a separate organization that generates it's own funding. It's no different than KPBS FM and TV in San Diego.

CSUS has taken a much more pro-active stance in Capital Public Radio operations since CPR moved back to Sac State's campus a few years back {they had been miles away in rented offices for a decade +}...in fact {as I told ex-Prez Lazar in 2003}, CSUS would start calling shots once they were back on campus, and he would either be gone or in a reduced role within 3 years...he lasted two and a half.

And CSU funding, though not dominant, are still considered vital, especially with all the translators now used, and that membership numbers have more-or-less shown little growth.

At one time, CPR {especially before Lazar through the CSUS leadership transition from Gerth} was very independent...but that's not the case anymore.

Thank you for the info!
