One of the best engineers to ever get fired by Clear Channel

I have just been informed that the man that built the various incarnations of KGB, the man that has been the leader of the geek squad in DX'ing, a HAM of the utmost HAMMERS, the man that everyone in the San Diego engineering community looked up to and respected for his contributions to the SBE and EAS, and frequency coordination successes in Southern California, John Barcroft, has been released from his position with the Clear Channel San Diego stations, just before Christmas, which seems to be an annual ritual of this company that is entrusted with serving the public interest, blah, blah blah, which all became meaningless with the deregulation that launched the mess we now have in terms of excessive ownership and lack of public service.

Not only did he do the above, he mentored many, always willing to share his knowledge and impart his wisdom. There wasn't a question he couldn't answer. There wasn't a broadcasting issue he didn't have thorough knowledge about, and there isn't an engineer that ever passed through San Diego that didn't benefit from his willingness to share that which he knew.

He didn't hire me as his assistant in 1984. It hurt, even as I still hear the words "KSON is looking for a Chief. You should look into that." I did, and it lasted twenty years, with many conversations that started with, "JB it's JB, can I ask you about......" and he would always answer with the many permutations of the issue I had not yet considered.

I am outraged at the willingness of this industry to eliminate people, of experience or not, to salvage their bottom line at the end of the year in support of their investors but never in support of the people that brought forth the facilities that facilitate the investment. And I am outraged by the many that accept that this is the norm. That it's expected, and then the year end speculation of who and how many will be cut without speaking anger and outrage of what is being taken from "you", the listener, bothers me. I suspect that the greedy owners are staring at losing their greedy gains and are defiantly sacrificing their wealth of people to save their wealth of Wall Street approval. So be it. It's not satisfying to recognize that in the long term they lose, because so many they have used and cast aside have lost in the short term to the benefit of those that already possess more wealth than they could possibly need, and have caused such loss to those that have truly been dedicated to the cause of public service and (remember?) good radio. As the industry digs it's grave with layoffs, voiceovers from out of market, loss of localism and immediacy, and "less is more" which is really a concept of "less is more for us, not you", the people that effect these changes have nothing to fear, as they will be gone with golden parachutes and shares of stocks to keep them and their heirs in fancy clothes and yachts for years to come. In the final analysis, it is we that lose from their greed. "We" being not just those dispensed with at their fiat, but the "we" that are supposed to be benefitting from the licenses issued in the public interest, and the "we" that understood and undertook the challenge of providing in the public interest. And the "we" that now seek alternatives because the familiar has become nothing more than a repetitious juke box of what the consultants say we want. Clearly, as defined by declining ratings and shares, they're full of shit.

The fact of the matter is, these people that do these things, have methodically milked and destroyed this industry to their gain, and certainly not in the public interest, and clearly not in the interest of making their product better, nor in serving their public, as is their charge.

And I have no respect for any participant of this destructive greed.

I have a huge respect for the engineer, John Barcroft. Sparky. "Really? Why?" Then he would give you his perspective without putting you down, but you would leave the conversation knowing you had been enriched with his knowledge.

Mr. Barcroft has become yet another monument to the stupidity of those with too many connections to Wall St. and their desire to line their own pockets without respect for the privalege they have been granted to serve the public interest.

Thank you JB. From JB.

And in case there's any doubt,

John A Buffaloe
Former Chief of the Jefferson Pilot Stations in San Diego

John goes all the way back to the early 1970's, when KGB was on Pacific Highway. I've always heard good things about him, and wish him the best. Clear Channel: doom on you, you filthy scum bastards.

If you over pay for any property the only way to make the numbers work is to can the staff. Lets vote...who thinks deregulation was a mistake? No agenda, just curious.

Hell hath no fury like former CC people scorned. :) John is a great engineer, but I recall a much different tone about CC when he was on his way to be CC's chief in New Orleans (they fired him from that right after Katrina). This is not to disrespect John (either of them) but only to remind you current CC people that in the end even the best and the brightest will get screwed no matter how hard you work or how much loyalty you profess while on the payroll. Repeat after me, "THEY JUST DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU." Not one bit.

grow up. cbs, cox, cumulus, entercom, citadel-----they all fire good people from time to time. REAL WORLD CALLING: deal with it

Grow up?
Why don't YOU grow up!
There's nothing wrong with someone posting because a long time friend was let go. In this case, it was a very important person. Engineers are the backbone of this industry. They make the clocks tic, the lights blink, the speakers speak, and the transmitters transmit. Without them? You have NOTHING, Not a freakin' thing! Those computers that CC, CBS, etc, use? Engineers make those work. It's not easy to get a good engineer who knows it all, and it can be just as hard to find one that is personable and has the people skills (which is optional, but nice to have). I don't know if I've met the person in question, but he did any work for KJQY or KKLQ in 1998, than I probably did. When all else goes wrong, the engineer is your friend. Here's hoping John gets back in the saddle soon. A good engineer should be allowed to retire, and never let go for something as petty as salary.

they didn't fire ALL the engineers, did they? answer: of course not. so those computers & transmitters will stay hummin'.

sorry your friend got canned and if he's as good as everybody sez he'll get a great gig again soon........but the "they don't care about U' and "u get screwed no matter how hard U work" is not exclusive to clear channel, the radio industry or any other company or industry. and the gm's gotta make a car payment therefore fire somebody is more from the mom & pop/small radio owner days. these days at the major companies supplying a car to the gm's and that sort of thing got cut way before personnel did in the budget process

so, yeah, it blows but it's real world radio (employment in general) and always has been, so- PLEASE grow up

Years ago John was a top40 jock and p.d. IN 1967 I worked with him at 1510 KASK in Ontario. He then went on to p.d. KERN in Bakersfield before getting the KGB gig.

Why did they fire him? ???

They should have offered him a 50% cut in salary and allowed him to stay. A good engineer is worth his weight in silver.

I agree, JB - John is one of the best engineers in San Diego, bar none. (As were you - except for your choice of audio processors ;D)

Most likely John took a walk because he couldn't put up with the bulls**t anymore - as many other folks in CC's SD cluster have done.

John's a great guy; a terrific mentor. I used everything he taught me at KERN 1410 (along with Buck's $$$, a top-notch staff and John's voice on the Legal ID) to make Rock'n Stereo FM-108 KKXX, during it's heyday from 1979 to 1988, the most popular CHR FM station in Bakersfield radio history. Now everyone take a deep breath. John will land somewhere very soon. And as the old saying goes, "They all come back to Bakersfield sooner or later."

The good news for good engineers is it's getting harder and harder to find good engineers. I bet John, with a little luck and time, will find something MUCH better than working for Crap Channel. Too bad he had to work for such a bunch of looser slimebags in the first place. Eventually stuff catches up with companies that keep screwing over the employees. After a while those that were still striving at CC are going to just celebrate mediocrity or find a new gig elsewhere. They obviously have no loyalty to their employees, so there's no reason to have any loyalty to CC. And they wonder why their stocks have sucked over the past couple of years? Is anyone supprised they HAD to go private to stop the hemmoraging? The sad part really is the Mays and their jerk buddies will still win regardless. I'm just glad John got free of them, even if it wasn't his choice.

guys keep it up and Clear Channel will buy radio-info and figure out who we all are and fire us all

can we pls. get a kleenex in here for all the whiny children?????

anybody who's been in radio for any amount of time and HAS NEVER BEEN FIRED hasn't really done radio worth doing

we're all supposed to be adults here.......it's called *LIFE* and we can whine about it or deal with it

as grown ups, it's our choice

Radio in the past was more volatile. That is very true. However, in the past you had MANY more other owners to work for. Now most markets are tied up with 4 or 5 players. Basically if you're kicked to the curb by one of these big companies, there's less chance by pure statistics that you can find another gig in town. So, basically, once again everyone looses except the jackasses that are at the top of the McRadio companies.

Rule #1 of today's radio: The jerks always win.

Rule #2 of today's radio: The FCC is here to assist McRadio to control all the public airwaves.

Rule #3 of today's radio: If you don't like what you hear, see rule #1 and #2.

Hi all,

A new guy here, been reading the posts but never really had much to say... until now.

I heard through the radio grapevine that Barcroft was fired because he and Rigg did not get along. His pals will not say what exactly or maybe the don't know but it seems there was a dis-agreement on how things should be done. If you ever saw Barcroft's work you know it was top notch stuff everything had to be just so and never second best. I've seen this and can vouch for it.

Before Rigg there was Kevin Douglas (spelling?) and the two had many disagreements. Saw this once too. But Douglas knew that Barcroft had the better idea and cooler heads prevailed. There was even a skit his co-engineers used to do about the arguments between Douglas and Barcroft and one of the guys there had Barcroft's mannerisms down pat. Funny it was.

Too bad about all this but radio being what it is will be like this for the forseable future, sadly. Barcroft will be ok as his past speaks volumes about the man, his work and his knowledge. San Diego Clear Channel will be fine. They will not go off the air as the remaing guys are capable and qualified. They will miss him as he was a mentor to many of them.

So the question is: "Where will Barcroft show up besides on the ham bands?" I will guess he will consult. He would be excellent in the field.
