One of the most positive things about this format I've read in awhile

Being that the past about 100 threads are negative with stations going off-the-air and/or morphing into AC formats, I found this one quite nice and encouraging about Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's smooth jazz station. This is one of the most encouraging things I've read in awhile. According to the article, the station has no problem selling out of ad availabilities. Go here http://www.groovejazzmusic.com/radio.html and scroll to the bottom where there's an article called "Smooth Jazz lives in South Central PA"

Read it yesterday, I-78. COMPLETELY agree with the writer's take. You can never be ALL things to ALL listeners, but I agree that you have to answer their e-mails, and let them know you care about their suggestions and will at least take them under advisement. I also think it is critically important to be visible in the community and at events, something I NEED to do to take my operation to the next level. Unfortunately I have been limited both by my health and my full time job, so I have spent most of my efforts just trying to keep programming tight. 92.7 is staffed by very decent, hardworking people. I had a nice chat with them up at Berks in 2009, and complimented them on their product and being the "last man standing" in PA.

A lot of us are limited by family commitments, full time jobs, health-our own or family members. There was a piece I saw somewhere about how one person now has to do 10 jobs..and with most of us in this little music world those 10 jobs are in addition to the "daytime job" You do a lot, and it's wonderful...the "I could do more" syndrome is alive and well but doing what you do is more than enough

Thanks, Cat. Doin' what I can, and I know you are too. Always wish it could be more, but life just isn't that simple :-\.

This example would tend to show that there is an opportunity for marginal signals that are run in a frugal manner can provide niche formats like smooth jazz outside the PPM markets.

This is a Class A station... less than 1 kw... which manages to bill just under $50 k a month in a market area (3 different rated markets) where there are about $50,000,000 radio dollars.

The obvious conclusion is that there is not enough money in the format to invite any kind of competition, and enough for a local operation to remain viable.

The current thinking is each group owner that owns a handful of FM stations needs:

1 Urban
1 Urban A/C
1 A/C
! Country
1 CHR
! Album or Classic Rock

So as you can see there's no room for Smooth Jazz as the big groups counter program each other.

My 28 year old daughter came over with a CD of Tango music that she heard while at Starbucks. Man she would drive some poor guy's music test crazy!
