One station for sports... the other for sports?

Again, I submit when the Coyotes decide to go in a new direction and hire a new head coach, we will see if KT'R goes live and carries the news conference.

Yes it is news, but on Snooze 92/3 KT'R-FM it should have been treated as :30 soundbites scattered about the TOH and BOH local news pods afterwards and in each of the :15 and :45 sports windows in PMD...and not simulcasting the whole presser as it was--rightfully so--being carried on Sports Parking Lot 620 KT'R.

Hey, if you wanted a simulcast just to say "we did a simulcast!" then double it up on Sports Siberia 860. It'd be better than that annoying promo loop.

Since we're talking about Wayne Gretzky. the greatest hockey player of all time, my guess is that they would - on both AM and FM, with a feed going to ESPN Radio. They'd have a better chance of carrying this news conference then the Coyotes' own flagship, K-GumpDUSky 1060 would.

Then, at 1 PM, Gambo & Ash on 620 would be talking about his replacement, while Captain Stupor on 92.3 would be asking "Is it icing where you are?" and have Michael Bidwill, Governor Janet, and the Kyko Roofing guy on as his guests on the McBland Group, discussing the move. ;D

Each appearance of a Bidwill or other high-ranking team executive on a Snooze 92/3 talk show counts as trade-out for the KT'R suite in the UPS Stadium, for use by TMISU honchos and, subject to reaching a certain ratings plateau, key on-air personnel (read: Pat, Ded, Darrell and Karlo).

Janet, because McBland likes to fawn over local politicos (see: Phil "K-Lite Rail" Gordon).

And the Kyko dude? Simple--Pat's new roof, and it comes with a lifetime warranty!

Speaking of sports, I was absentmindedly preset-surfing the other day -- about a week ago, I suppose -- and I heard them broadcasting an ASU Men's B-Ball game on the mighty 1260. It was 5:00-ish in the afternoon, and I was on the 101 at Chaparral. The signal was coming in crystal clear, so I guess they really had the hamsters spinning overtime...

G&A were on 620 at the time, so it looks like Devils basketball isn't high enough on the totem pole to preempt them.

I'm the PD and Station Manager for The Blaze 1260 AM. Glad to hear SOMEONE was out there at least accidentally hearing our signal.

Since some may believe you're pumping illegal wattage out of your LP-AM--I have
heard 1260 from Thomas Mall to the 'Tuke--would you care to give us the scoop
(chocolate, butterscotch or rocky rococ--road!) on your rig running legally?

Haha, it's obviously tough to explain why people can get the signal in different areas at different times. While sometimes I can get it around the 101 area, sometimes I can barely get the signal at my own house near downtown Tempe. Depends on what kind of bounce our tiny signal can get...sometimes its inaudible right outside the station, once I even got it in central Phoenix. It's definitely hit or miss.

What I can tell you is that our "mighty" ASU station is operating at just 7 watts of power, which is enough to keep us at our limit of expected signal radius of the ASU campus. We also don't interfere with any other surrounding AM frequencies...there's actually a story about why we had to move off of our original frequency (660) in the 80's because we were interfering. I can assure ya'll that we're broadcasting within our bounds ;D

But on the topic at hand...they've gotta do something about 860 sooner or later. It's pretty crappy that a high power signal with a frequency (860) that has strong recognition throughout the Valley has become nothing more than a jukebox for promos screaming "Gambo and Ash are on our team!" By the way, just out of curiosity, does anyone know which station (620, 910, 1060) broke the story of Russ Grimm joining the Cardinals staff?

Why do you think we named it Sports Siberia 8~sixty several months ago? It's obvious TMISU want to make sure 110% of the listenership on KMVP transfers to Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty in the least amount of time. Nurse Jeff and I aren't sure why they just don't simulcast KT'R-AM from 6a to 6pm and be done with it.

...and speaking of the Devils, we understand ASU basketball is living in the shadows of The Suns on Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty. Chick b'ball airs on Sports Lumberyard 14~forty, of all stations! Why TMISU don't keep 8~sixty for overflow purposes remains a mystery at the Buckeye Media Hut.

High power? They run a whole 1000 watts with a night pattern that doesn't even cover the city limits of Phoenix, let alone the whole metro (They get noisy north of Shea Blvd., east of the Loop 101 in Tempe & Scottsdale, and south of Baseline).

That was good enough in the '70s when they were KIFN and most of the Spanish-speaking population lived on the south and west sides of the city. It doesn't work for a station broadcasting in any language anymore. They need to upgrade their power to at least 5 kW fulltime when/if they move the transmitter site or shut it down completely.

As far as the lack of an ESPN Radio simulcast on 860 is concerned, I don't know why they're not doing it unless (a) their contract with ESPN won't allow it to be carried on two signals in one market, or (b) they want to make people quit listening to 860 and this is the best way they thought of making the transition. I suspect the latter.

Then why not yank Gaydos from News 92~three, where Hip Hop used to live, and turn 8~sixty into Radio Gaydos until TMISU sell the station? That would drive listeners away faster than anything Nurse Jeff and I know!

Oh it's great to have Gaydos on Sports Siberia 8~sixty!

Here, here, now... I clearly said I was "absentmindedly preset-surfing." That would imply I've got The Blaze as a preset, ja? Hardly accidental!

I was pulling into work at Air Ln. and 40th St. the other day and was jamming out on the 1260 to Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American, which I haven't heard in years. "Soft serve... sugar on the outside... our hearts... liver and the topsoil..." or whatever the words actually are.

Does Arbitron do negative numbers?

McBland does existentialism: "Are you where you are?"
