One who is in favor of WLW's addition...

Count me as apparently one of the few who is pleased with the addition of 700 WLW on xm.....even though i live in Columbus Ohio, i cannot get good reception of The Big One at my downtown office...and i am happy to finally hear Mike McConnell and Bill Cunningham at work...for those unfamiliar, the "Stooge Report" segments between Willie and his sidekick Bill "Seg" Dennison are priceless....good addition....

I think its an awesome additiong. One of the reasons I initially joined XM was the replays of Cunningham and McConnel as well as the simulcast of KIIS as well as Kane on 90s on 9. I was one of the first 75,000 subscribers and am glad I stayed as they finally took one of my suggestions of adding a MLB package. I live in Cincinnati though have the XM boombox in my office so now I get to hear the greatest radio personality on Earth again..Bill Cunningham.

note to the NAB..satellite radio..its worth paying for!!</P>

I have no problem with WLW itself, but the lack of fidelity! I heard it during the first hour, and it sounded super. Since then, it's been mediocre at best. Yes, I know it's an AM station, but when I spend my money for a radio service, I don't want it to sound like AM. Ways need to be found to improve bandwidth.
I'd even favor fewer channels to improve fidelity. But if you want a comparison, late at night, check out the difference between 173 and the same programming on 171. Just 'cause 173 is talk, it doesn't have to sound crappy.

WLW appears to be sent in a codec that sounds just a notch or two better than a good AM signal. I'm OK with it.

What I'm NOT OK with is the problem on the OTHER talk channels, which now have a pretty bad hiss/S/splatter effect. Almost all of them!

Talk about fidelity. One thing that get's me about XM is it was touted as CD quality and thats BS. I've talked with one of the DJ's and he informed me they play MP2 format. Why on earth would someone say they were CD quality yet play compressed formats? No wonder local FM has more high end and sounds clearer. I just have FM's commercials. Someone told me Sirius sounds better although I haven't had any experience with it. To me XM sounds very compressed and bass heavy. I barely get decent high end on the music channels. I am getting all 3 reception bars on my SkyFI 2. I love XM but it just isn't what I was led to believe in terms of sound quality.

Oddly enough, WLW/173 is one of the few listenable talk channels after the change this week. I still hear some S/splatter on it, but not nearly as bad as I'm hearing on channels like FOX News Talk, Air America and others.

It really wasn't that awful for the talk channels until this week.

Sound Quality (was Re: One who is in favor of WLW's addition...)

My sound quality was fine until the three new channels popped on the air...I thought there was discussion about Music Lab and The Flo going off-air once this happened so we wouldn't experience these losses in sound quality. I'm noticing it both on my SkyFi and MyFi.

I haven't noticed any difference...sometimes I wonder if you are hearing what you are thinking you will hear. Placebo effect. I could be wrong though.

Well, since I didn't think I'd hear this problem until, well, I heard it... :D
