One Year as Rush Radio and both News stations can claim victory in NOLA

WRNO rocked local talk radio a year ago when it took Rush Limbaugh from powerhouse WWL
Posted by Dave Walker, TV columnist, The Times-Picayune March 29, 2009

Wednesday will mark one year since Rush Limbaugh moved from WWL to WRNO, and both stations have happy anniversary stories to tell.

The WWL AM-870 and FM-105.3 simulcast remains the dominant news-talk outlet in town despite the sizable void left by the departure of Limbaugh's loyal audience.

It was an interesting article that told many of us what we already knew:

1). Castner and Wallensky have a "fraction" of WWL's morning audience. Even going against one of the worst combos in radio (Delgiorno and Monica), C&W prove day after day that

a) They don't deserve to be in a market this big
b) They're not from here and they have no idea what is important here
c) They're worse than Bob & Monica (which I didn't think was possible)

2). RUSH beats anyone.
3). Local almost always beats syndicated in New Orleans
4). Osterlind has less than 1/2 the audience of Sports Talk. Again, not from here and has no idea what is important to us.

So, in a nutshell, if WRNO had even halfway decent AM and PM Drive shows hosted by locals, the station would be much more competitive with WWL.

How can Dick Lewis or anyone at RNO objectively look at the numbers after 1 year and pat themselves on the back? Without Rush they'd be nothing; with Rush, they're still an also ran, and always will be.

Prediction: Next year, next book, same results.

First of all, I vowed to NEVER listen to 99.5 after they wrecked a heritage station - and I mean long before they abandoned classic rock because their idea was the one or two top-rated songs by artists or groups - way too streamlined.
Of course they will gain ground by "buying" ratings - Rush costs big money (and while he is popular - I never could listen anyway). Can't tell you how bad AM & PM talent is because I vowed NEVER to listen - so I will take your word.
Kids (15-25) don't listen to radio at all - it's all downloaded onto I-pods - I have a son 23 and he and all his friends do not know anything about radio. The urban stations will always rule because their listeners cannot afford I-pods or satellite (which the afore-mentioned kids also do not listen to).
The only reason LMG does well is due to the women who have it tuned in at work - same as other cities.
Even I hardly listen anymore - love the I-pod - my music with no ads or weasily-sounded dj's reading the same copy from who-knows-where !

Will any article ever mention that WWL's numbers are a combined total? I'd love to see what the AM and FM are getting individually, but that'll never happen.

yo bjdj,

kids do still listen to radio.

while tech has certainly made its score radio still does huge numbers in 12-17 and 18-34.
you have a sample of one person, your 23 year old son. please, consider what you post!
