O'Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

A friend called me late last week and told me something that made me sick, but didn't suprise me one bit.

On BJ O'Sheas' Tuesday July 12th show, O'Shea said that he thought that the death of Don Geronimos' wife, Freda Sorce was a hoax cooked up by Don and Mike to get ratings.

I have no problem with personalities in the "shock talk" format saying things that are outrageous to gain attention and listenership, but O'Sheas' statement is beyond tasteless and bottom of the barrel and that's being kind. I mean, what if it was his butt-ugly wife or one of his kids that was killed?

I used to listen to KQBZ when the Don and Mike show was a part of the lineup. Since I cannot stand the other shows on the station, when they got dumped, I dumped "The Buzz". I heard O'Sheas' show many times during the two years D&M were on KQBZ and my opinion of him is that he is a low-rent, less than mediocre talent that has coattailed his way to marginal success. Non syndicated middays in Seattle is not exactly the big time.

Taking my opinion of this turd out of it, I am curious to know what others think of BJ making a statement like this. Taking his radio personna out of it, I think it shows what his REAL personality must be like. Am I the only one who thinks he should retract that statement on air and admit to it being something that was idiotic of him to say?
Edited by nocleverhandle on 07/18/05 11:35 PM.

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

Well, considering that Don faked his own death a while back, nothing is out of the question. Another reason he brought it up was for lack of information. He never said that it was 100% a fake, but he thoguht it was a possibility. Once he got all of the information, and then offered his condolences to the Sorce family and observed a moment of silence as they went to break.

As for your other comments about BJ, you should really get your facts straight before you comment on him. It was D&M that ran that station into the ground. BJ gave up his time slot which had awesome ratings and D&M did HORRIBLE!!!! I listened to them quite a bit and didn't think to highly of them. And, on, they said a lot of bad things about The Buzz and Tom Lykis and purposly said BJs last name wrong. To me, they were a couple of first class jerks. I'm glad they are off the Buzz.

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

Well first of all your "friend" gave you some bad information. BJ did say he thought it was possible that this story was fake because it was not being widely reported and the original source actually removed the story for a short time prompting his comments, which were only that if they did fake the story that it was a pathetic thing to do to listeners of their show. The moment he was able to confirm the story he was more than gracious and paid proper respects to Geronimo & family.

You can't blame folks like BJ who know more about Don & Mike than most of us do from the industry standpoint not buying into the initial reports after the history of D&M trying to fake one of their own deaths on listeners not to long ago. BJ did nothing wrong in this case and considering no other show in the area including the other shows on the Buzz even mentioned this story he did more than most.

As I recall they're not above trashing their own listeners(especailly their former Puget Sound listeners), too. I listened to one show where they refused to take any listener calls for the remainder of the show due to a couple of callers giving them a bad time about something. Even BJ, Leykis, O&A, and Stern have more common sense than that. Unless there's a reason for it.
______________

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

Contrary to most opinions on this board, BJ is a very good person. He has a big heart and generally does the right thing. He quietly cares about a lot of people. The few conversations I've had with BJ showed me that he is absolutely sincere and real in everything he says.

There is no way that he would just flat out go "It's a hoax" without having some reason to believe it. With Don faking his death, the news story pulled and other oddities about this story, BJ gave his opinion. Once he found out the truth he gave a respectful commentary even though he HATES those guys.

He could have just said nothing like everyone else on the buzz and in the Seattle market.
I don't think it was even mentioned on the NEWS station

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

I heard first-hand (first-ear?) when BJ gave a moment's silence on his show for Don's wife, so he was respectful as far as I'm concerned, regardless of earlier comments he may have made.

BJ might be a good person, but my only experience of him is his on-air persona, and I hate his show. I've never understood why he (who by his own admission does an *entertainment show*) insists on "discussing" serious topics like gender (in)equality, abortion, parents' rights, etc. If it were really discussion, then he wouldn't be able to shout over callers, cut them off, etc. He doesn't care about changing minds or discovering new ideas--he's just another shock-value ratings (BLEEP).

I really miss D&M being on the Buzz, and I'm relieved that they're streaming live at http://www.1067wjfk.com/index.html

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

BJ is a completely different person off the air. Great guy, big heart, all around nice guy. Take his schtick for what it is, schtick.

Take out the extraneous two 'C' letters plus the 'K,' then re-arrange two letters in the last word of your post, then you have it correct.

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

I have listened to D&M for nine years and Don has NEVER faked his own death. That is BS and you know it. Stop trying to justify a stupid remark by BJ O'Shea. It makes you look stupid too.

It doesn't change the fact that I would rather chew on foil than listen to BJ O'Shea, his wife is still BUTT-UGLY and he will never be known nationally. He is just not good enough. HA HA

PS: For those of you that keep saying that D&M used to insult the northwest audience, you shouldn't have listened anyway because you are incapable of understanding a joke. Stop being cry babies and expecting people to kiss your ass all the time.

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

Oh, yeah, trashing women 4 hours a day is brilliant schtick. He deserves some kind of humanitarian award for being such a nice guy. I wonder if the Nobel Prizes have already been given out this year?

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

I loved it so much when Don called BJ, BJ O'SHEA that I am going to start doing it too. I love the subtle ways you can tell someone they are a nobody. Messing up someones name on purpose to show them they are unknown!!!

Re: BJ Shea Trolls

Every BJ thread makes the trolls come out of their caves.

Don and Mike do the worst radio on earth. Dull, dull, dull...

I'd rather have Mark and Brian back than those two fat old bores.

I've communicated with BJ via emails and he seems to be pretty mellow when he's off the air. He's a fellow sci-fi fan such as myself which kind of helps. I sent a Star Wars related email to him the other day and judging by the wording of the response I got I could tell his ears perked up a bit. Any SW fan is okay as far as I'm concerned. Double R and Toppy seem like good guys, too. They need to do a listener party here in Port Orchard sometime.
______________

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

You can't unring a bell.

Bottom line...............he shouldn't have said ANYTHING until he had the truth.

I think he knew the truth all along. It was a very cheap shot.

Just as they make the BJ apologists come out of theirs.

It is amazing to me how BJ's fans will defend him no matter WHAT he says. Since I don't listen to the jack knob, I was unaware of his comments about Don's wife, but I am not surprised one bit at what he said. I don't even think Tom Leykis would say something like that!

And for the record, I love Don and Mike as well!

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

Here is a description of what happened, from Richard Roeper's column in the Chicago Sun-Times:

Longtime Chicago radio listeners might remember a guy named Don Geronimo, who was on WLS-AM and WBBM-FM in the 1980s and has popped up on local stations as a syndicated host. He never really connected with Chicago audiences, never came close to reaching the status of a Steve Dahl or a Jonathan Brandmeier here -- but he's been a pretty big star in other markets for a long time. These days Geronimo is the co-host of the nationally syndicated "Don and Mike Show."

Earlier this month, there was a 10-car pileup in Ocean City, Md. A Ford Explorer crossed the median to get around the pileup and hit a Lexus head-on.

The driver of the Lexus was Freda Wright-Sorce, wife of Don Geronimo. She died from her injuries.

The other driver? He'll be just fine -- at least physically.

According to news reports, Freda was an integral part of the show who often called in and had good-natured disputes with her husband. As one local newspaper put it, "[F]ans of radio's Don and Mike Show may have felt as though they'd lost a member of their own family . . . when they learned Don Geronimo's wife, Freda Wright-Sorce, had been killed in a car crash."

Re: Shea says Freda Sorce (Don Geronimos' wife) death was a hoax.

You act as though he is proclaiming women should be wearing Burka's and walking three steps behind their men and nothing could be further from the truth. He has been married for 18 years has two great kids you mistake the man on radio for the man off-air and that is not at all the case.

If his brand of radio didn't attract listeners his show would not be rated where it is, and the Buzz wouldn't have come up with the whole "Radio for Guys" campaign which everyone seemed to trash but it has been far from a failure when you consider the numbers before they went with the "Radio for Guys" campaign.

He gives the people what they want and it seems to be working because his numbers are solid.
