Other signs that dance music is apart of pop culture

First Activision is bringing out DJ Hero, which is Guitar Hero with a turntable. www.DJhero.com

Second: If you have been watching TBS with the Phillies kicking the crap of the LA, you would have seen the George Lopez show commercials with the Noisettes Dont Upset the Rhythm being used in the commercial.

And we have chr stations now mentioning dance as one of the styles of music they play. before that was unheard of.

Much earlier in the decade it was actually quite common for stations to include the word Dance as one of the styles of music they were airing. KIIS-FM L.A. used to do it all the time, as did stations like 107.1 A1A Melbourne.

The Noisettes sound is Dance/Pop although I believe back in the UK they are in generally perceived as a pure Pop act, similar to the Sugababes (check out their Dance/Pop hit "Get Sexy"). It's also got a lot of that retro Amy Winehouse sound, albeit more polished for Pop audiences (like Duffy).

Yes, things have picked up a bit :) And I can't WAIT to get my hands on DJ Hero! :)

Noting the George Lopez spot with the Noisettes, that may be another angle dance music has to go to in order to become popular.....license the music out to television (via commercials, promo spots) and movies (part of a soundtrack). If we can get a MAJOR sponsor, great! But even if we get a local cable ad (for a local car dealership, gym, etc) that runs during the 1 minute cable "avails" that the cable network provides to their affiliates for local ad time, then that would be a big help as well :)

Despite the leaps and hurdles in this country regarding dance music in terms of mainstream radio airplay, dance IS a part of our culture, in some way, shape or form. And if going this route can help get awareness out...I am all for it! :)

I am really bad at Guitar Hero and Rock Band, I know almost NO modern rock songs. I was good at DDR, and I expect to be really good at DJ Hero.
But thing is, different DJs have different styles of mixing, and if the video game forces only one way to mix, that might piss the real DJs off. Hopefully this game places a lot of emphasis on beat matching, since that is a basic skill for any DJ.
I think this game will make a bunch of wannabee DJs, and a few of them might actually turn out to be good so there's nothing wrong.

This makes the count of rock video games to dance video games even at 2-2.

From my reviews, it seems dj hero will focus more on rap and urban, with just a touch of dance... Hopefully you can create dance mixes out of the urban songs.

Yeah but the fact that they used Daft Punk in the commercials shows you where this is going to go. It may lean Urban to start but look at Rock Band and Guitar Hero they range from Metallica to the Beatles

Just curious...what's the age group & demo of the people that actually dance to Dance music? I never have any luck getting anyone to dance to anything but the Cupid Shuffle, Play That Funky Music or Brick House for the millionth time. Oh, yeah, can't forget "Shook Me All Night Long". Does that make those songs "Dance" songs?

Nightfly, what city or market do you live in? What club do you spin at?

Dance music generally has an audience in the big cities, and the heavily populated states.
You won't find a big Dance scene in Montana or West Virginia.

Here in Nashville there's actually a pretty decent scene. ATB was here last week, Tiesto is here next week, George Acosta a few days after that, and Deadmau5 next month.
At the same time, there are clubs here that play "The Cupid Shuffle". Barf!

Oh, nightfly is a cool name. Blank & Jones had a tune by that name earlier in the decade :)

Thanx on my name...used to be an all night jock & "The Nightfly" was a Donald Fagan album about a 3rd shift jock at a small station. I kinda related. :)
Yeah, I do live in a very one dimensional area btw. Last night at the bar I work at in the early hours while the band was setting up I was playing September(Earth Wind & Fire), old Levert (Cassinova), Chic(Good Times) and someone requested K.C & the Sunshine Band. The floor was packed. That was the most anyone danced the entire night after the hip hop tribute band began. It amazes me sometimes.

my G/F was eased into dance by me, starting with the lady gaga stuff, and the pop dance stuff now its almost all she listens to.... She is 17 now... (SHUT UP) I know im too old for her,,, heard it millions of times...

Hmmm... must be a voice track then because at first I figured it was just KZZP doing that. Well, the more the better.
