Pappas drops local news on its Reno CW and TuVision stations

Visalia based Pappas Telecasting dropped local newscasts on its two Reno stations citing not enough revenue to make it worthwhile.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported the story Wednesday:

The last newscasts on either station happened Monday.

"It's important to be clear that this is not a performance-related issue with the KREN and KAZR staffs," said Dennis Davis, president and chief operating officer of Pappas Telecasting, in a news release. "The videojournalists, producers, anchors and news managers have given their best efforts to produce a product that we can all be proud of."

The stations at Meadowood Mall produced their last news broadcasts on Monday.

About 2,000 Reno-area households watch KREN Monday through Sunday, said Howard Shrier, chief operating officer/TV Stations Group for the telecasting company.

In an earlier web story, rgj.com reported:
The elimination of news is partly the result of the impending sale of some Pappas Telecasting properties and partly because the stations didn't see adequate advertising revenues to justify the expense of the news division, the company said.

Reno broadcasters were very surprised at the change.

They're also wondering what's going to happen to the high-tech glassed in broadcast facility Pappas spent a lot of money on inside the Mall.

It was the first "ground up" high definition facility in the Reno market, and was the flagship of Pappas' chain. Pappas also hubbed its TuVision Spanish language network from the facility, using Internet Protocol (IP) networking to distribute content to its owned affiliates.

That leaves Reno with local news in English on the CBS, NBC, ABC affiliates, "imported" news on Cox-owned KRXI, Fox 11 from co-owned Fox affiliate KTVU, 2, Oakland, and PBS news programs on Univ. of Nev., Reno's KNPB, 5.

The Univision network is carried on two Entravision-owned low power stations. I can't find any locally produced Spanish TV news in the Reno market.

I'm not surprised at KREN cancelling their local newscast. Since, their ad revenue seems to be low compare to other stations in the RENO market. I think KRXI should start producing their own newscast instead of simucasting KTVU.

Actually, the KTVU simulcast at 10 pm gets better ratings than any of the Reno news programs at 11.

KTVU's ratings are not that much better...at least for market 118?
Anyway, rumor has it that Gray (KOLO 8 in Reno) is looking to swoop up that equipment/facility.

That type of HD equipment won't stay dormant for long. Since KRNV is the only local station broadcasting local news in HD now, either KOLO or KTVN will want a piece of that. (Sarkes Tarzian tend to be cheap-skates)

I never understood why someone would put a television station inside a mall (and a crappy mall at that). Maybe they'll bring back the Sam Goody that used to be there...oh wait! :)
