Shares of Warner Bros. Discovery spiked more than 33% Thursday on a report by the Wall Street Journal that Paramount Skydance is prepping a takeover bid of WBD in its entirety.

Another horrible media mega-merger, this one where the world's richest man and his son would control an outsized amount of control over entertainment content.

This would be a nightmare for the entertainment industry, specifically content creators, for consumer choice and competition. Not to mention David Ellison has already shown his willingness to damage one of America's most respected news organizations and do whatever it takes to get his way.

Hopefully the FTC will block this, but I have my doubts given the current environment.

There's some heritage here. Ted Turner wanted to buy CBS in the 80s. There's an agreement now between CBS News and CNN. The linear part of this is likely unimportant to SkyDance. The two movie studios would control a lot of content. There's already some precedent with Disney buying part of Fox a few years ago.

I think SkyDance offered Paramount stockholders double the current stock price for their shares. If they do that for WBD, it will be a good deal.
