Pats-Giants game to be trimulcast on CBS, NBC, and NFL Network

I'm surprised that the deal would allow both CBS and NBC to carry the game. I would have thought that only one network would get the chance. But this probably will be an improvement in the ratings for NBC, and CBS probably won't do any worse than they normally do for Saturday nights. College games did well on Saturday nights for CBS, at least until ABC started carrying them weekly. (Something I've thought should have been done for years before it actually happened.)

As for the other Saturday games, if CBS or NBC doesn't want them, let them go to Fox or ESPN. The Thursday games don't make much sense to me either. In any case, aren't they locked up with the NFL network for a few more years?

There is no way CBS nor NBC will stop NFLN from shamelessly promoting itself--they need the programming. The basic plan still remains--to make Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House, Mediacom, Cablevision et. al. get some more complaints from sports fans.

And if NFL Network chooses to bash said cable providers during the telecast, encouraging viewers to switch to satellite, then it's a potential win for local broadcast affiliates. They compete with cable systems for local advertising dollars. They love to make clients think that a drop in subscribership will mean a drop in viewership (even though there are plenty of examples of lower-penetrated cable networks delivering higher ratings than supposedly fully-penetrated broadcast stations within the same time period.)

Isn't it also true that many of the same cable systems that don't want to pay for NFL Network also don't want to pay (much, if any) for retransmission consent? Whereas most satellite systems are paying locals for carriage rights? So any new viewers shuttled to satellite only help local stations gain more incremental revenue.

They're network O&Os so I can say that the chances of either of them pre-empting it are somewhere around zero.

Re Baltimore, how about Hearst Argyle's WBAL-11 (NBC)'s chances?

In DC, how about Gannett's WUSA ("Woosuh")-9 (CBS) clearing it?

WJZ and WRC are O&O's so I think their carrying NE/NYG is a given.

OTOH, in the Hbg./Lancaster/York/Lebanon market, WHP-21 (CBS) and WGAL-8 (NBC) carriage chances could be interesting. ;D

I'm just curious how the NFL "chose" CBS and NBC as the networks to simulcast the game on. Why didn't Fox get it since they air more NFL games than NBC? Also, are there areas in the country where you can only get a CBS affiliate or an NBC affiliate and not both? I'm glad they are doing this, but I must say I'm surprised by the arrangements.

Repeating my post on the New England TV board from a few minutes ago...

Will WCVB & WWOR be reimbursed for their loss of exclusivity? Both stations did sign contracts with the NFL for this game, and allowing CBS and NBC to also carry the game in Boston and NYC violates that deal.

According to one Patriots message board, WCVB is in court over this, but I can't find confirmation from any Boston news source. The poster doesn't provide a link, so I'm guessing that he heard it on one of Boston's radio stations.

I wonder if any CBS and NBC affiliates outside the Northeast will refuse to carry the game, deciding to show local programming (or worse, infomercials). I'd think NFL cities' affiliates (and of course, all O&Os) would carry it, but would smaller markets' CBS & NBC stations in the Midwest, south, and west bother?

I doubt it...it's a bonus NFL game they didn't previously have coverage for. I'll bet your bottom dollar that the advertisers who bought time for these slot are still going to get their ads run, and for what will likely be a bigger draw.

There's both an AFC and NFC team playing, so that's not the reason.

Perhaps FOX decided to pass, since NBC and CBS already stepped in.

It's a repeat episode since the network does not want to burn a new
show (even if there wasn't a writers' strike) airing in only the MT and
PT zones.

Doesn't NBC do something similar with Dateline repeats on Sunday nights
after SNF for the left coast...and Fox pre-feeding filler for 6-7 MT on
Sundays that's never seen in ET and CT due to NFL runover/post-game?

As a side note, this is also what CBS provides to the Western part of the country when a Special Report completely wipes out a first-run episode of "The Price is Right". Affiliates airing TPIR at 10am MT or later get a PSA-laden rerun of TPIR (usually from the previous season -- this season, they would presumably air an episode from earlier in the season, due to the hosting change.) Besides the PSAs, this version of TPIR has no CBS "bug" in the lower right corner, and the show's own credit roll (not CBS's split-screen version) airs at the end of the show.

I wonder if the PSA version of "48 Hours" will also have the full credits and be bug-free?

While the MT stations airing TPIR live at 9am (KPHO-TV PHX for example)
get the special report along with the ET/CT affils, and the PT stations get the
"PSA rerun" from their normal in pattern left coast sat feed at 10am, how do
the MT stations which air the show in pattern at 10am get the repeat show,
since they normally delay off of the east coast feed?

At 12noon ET (10am MT) the regular NYC feed is in black (or doing news and/or
promo feeds I suppose) for the local news window, the special CT zone split feed
is running Y&R, and I'm guessing the left coast is getting the alternate feed of GL,
so does CBS utilize an additional transponder for the "replacement" TPIR to the
in-pattern MT affils?

That begs a bigger question--if they have an extra sat channel just "lying around"
why don't they use it for a full-time Mountain zone feed, a la NBC? (Same question
could be put to ABC.)

Thursday's morning shows--airing two hours later in the MT zone--were just horrible,
what with the news unfolding in Pakistan. The 7-8 hour, it's like nothing out of the
norm was happening. By 8:00 MT at least the ABC and CBS stations in PHX were
airing some sort of update in the TOH news window (although I'm not sure if it
was live or an hour old by some "live CT" references I saw). Meanwhile on NBC,
there was ol' Willard working the crowd outside of 30 Rock. Closed circuit for
peacock affil KPNX Mesa: why the heck didn't you dial up the left coast satellite
at 8am? I'm sure they were all over the story for the PT zone. You do this all
the time in the summer when 7 there is 7 here--were you afraid Edna in Sun City
would be soooo confused by all the 7:XX (PT) time references at 8:XX (MT)?
