Pats-Giants game to be trimulcast on CBS, NBC, and NFL Network

It's interesting you bring up TPIR. Because I remember last year (no, wait, it would still be "this" year, lol) on January 2, TPIR was pre-empted in the East Coast for former President Ford's funeral. The episode originally scheduled to air that day was rescheduled for a later date, and the West Coast got the replacement episode. But I actually remember on January 1, here on the East Coast, after the split screen credits were over, there was this screen that appeared for about half a second. It was an orange box with the text, "Please keep tape rolling for Daytime credits 1-2-07."

While the MT stations airing TPIR live at 9am (KPHO-TV PHX for example)
get the special report along with the ET/CT affils, and the PT stations get the
"PSA rerun" from their normal in pattern left coast sat feed at 10am, how do
the MT stations which air the show in pattern at 10am get the repeat show,
since they normally delay off of the east coast feed?

I seem to recall reading elsewhere that CBS provides a special Mountain feed in these instances. "Country103", can you shed some light on this?

KPHO gets the PSA reruns only when Phoenix is the same as Pacific Time (DST in effect for the rest of the country), since their airing of TPIR during that time isn't live off the East Coast feed.

This is a first, and the first simulcast (or more) since the NFL-AFL Championship Game of 1967 (what is incorrectly call Super Bowl I).

...the NFL-AFL Championship Game of 1967 wasn't simulcast. IIRC, CBS carried it live and the commentary-less videotape was taken from Columbia Square to NBC Burbank for NBC to add its commentators upon prime time replay later the same date...

My take:

I think NFLN doesnt do too bad, in terms of production value. The only thing is Bryant Gumbel is just God awful. The games have passed him by and he makes it all about him. Collingsworth is not bad as a commentator, you need that "former player perspective" but Gumbel just flat out sucks. He's had a year to get back into it. NO DICE! They should have hired his brother, Greg, who is way better to listen to.

Just my $0.02

I realized that I made a mistake in saying that Charter included NFLN in their digital sports tier. It is the Jackson, TN Energy Authority's cable system that is an alternative in some areas of Jackson to Charter that has NFLN.

For Charter the broadcast tonight will take up channels 3 through 6 coming from the all CBS and NBC stations from Memphis and Nashville. I'm waiting to see if my wife thinks there's something wrong with the TV not changing channels. ;D

Well, I'm watching the game right now on CBS, Instead of Jim and Dr. Phil, we get Bryant & Chris. It might be the last time we'll be hearing from Bryant, "The TODAY Show" misses him.

You have a gift for understatement. Gumbel is far worse; he sounds like he's reading the play-by-play from a script - no natural passion.

Since I have Bright House here in Florida, tonights NE/NYG game is my first experience with NFLN. I think the problem with Gumbel's play-by-play is his voice. Think about some of the great play-by-play men and they all have unique but great voices...Keith Jackson, Pat Summerall, Curt Gowdy, Brent Musberger (not everyone's favorite but he does have a "big game" quality in his later years), Verne Lundquest, Jack Buck, etc. These guys are basically all great radio voices with or without TV. Gumble is a studio host, news/sports anchor, interviewer. Not a play by play voice.

Well, last night's NFL Net. broadcast was better than some Madden/Micheals games I've watched.

Of course, the games where Madden & Micheals were bad were ones like Colts/Ravens this season ... awfully one-sided games for which I don't blame Madden for no longer being excited.

Gumbel's voice is probably part of the problem ... it sounded stretched at all times just to be heard over the crowd mics.

I realize the belief around here is that NFL Network and/or the local cable systems that refuse to carry NFLN suck for various reasons.

Let me add a bit of a different perspective.

The crappy little cable system here in Starkville, MS carries NFLN on its analog line-up on channel 56 (I think). Being a college town, I can understand that. However, it does not carry the Thursday games (at least according to one of my managers). I think it was the Thanksgiving Day game (perhaps?) that he had watched part of the game on his mother's satellite only to return home, during halftime, and find that the game was replaced with alternative programming causing him to miss the last half of the game.

Being that this is a small town (about 20,000 pop) everyone knows all the local managers and techs, etc, at the cable company. My manager asked one of the cable company's execs why the game wasn't on the system and was told that NFLN charges an additional fee to carry the Thursday night game in addition to the carriage fee already being charged and that the cable company wasn't willing or wasn't able to pay the additional assessment.

In light of this information, it became clear to me why Comcast, Time Warner, et al are not interested in carrying the NFL Network at all. It's a double edged sword for the cable companies: either pay the additional assessment for however many games or receive a barrage of complaints from their viewers.

I would say it's likely that NFL offered the satellite companies (who offer the NFL Season Pass programming package) a special deal in order to carry the network (with the Thursday games) but are not offering a "bundled" carriage fee to the cable companies.

If I were the cable companies, I would balk at the extra fee too.

Although DirecTV and DISH Network carry the NFL Network, only DirecTV carries the NFL Sunday Ticket package; they ponied up lots of $$$ for exclusivity.

Time to put my 3 cents in.

I thought the game was excellent, both the play of it, and the COVERAGE!

I belive this might be the spark that the NFL Network needed to get some subscribers.

As for the announcers, it actually reminded me of NBC's crew.

As for Gumbel, aka Kermit The Frog, he wasn't that bad, but not great either.

But for my choice, Tom Hammond should've been the guy.

He and Collinsworth, aka Beeker, work great, I watched the game they called for NBC last year, and they worked a lot during the mid-90's

when NBC had the NFL.

All and all I give the game, 3 ;D ;D ;D out of 5!

All that matters was that Roger Godell got a big payday.
