Peculiar announcers talk as if they've taken the Soma for WCRB-FM WGBH Classical

not sure what he is ever talking about!!

I'm not an expert on comedy, but I think if you have to explain a joke several times, it didn't work.

Good thing that we have WHRB for Classical, where the announcers don't sound like they are on Prozac.

Sirius XM has a great classical host in Preston Trombley, who sounds very much alive and has a sense of humor as well. Now THAT'S a rare quality for a classical announcer to have! On the other hand, Martin Goldsmith, whose shift precedes Trombley's, sounds embalmed.

I always enjoyed WNCN in the 80's, early 90's in New York for the same reason. The hosts sounded like people, real people. Not snooty "I know more than you do" attitudes.

That always has, and still does turn me off from WQXR and WCRB.

I haven't listened to QXR in a long time, but as far as WCRB is concerned the brush you're painting with here is a bit too broad. Have you actually listened to Laura Carlo, Cathy Fuller or weekend guy Ray Brown? They are absolutely not pretentious or snobbish, and have a very friendly and upbeat style.

It's actually nice to hear a station that doesn't sound like a Beavis and Butthead reunion.

I agree.

You have to understand the mentality of the average poster on this board.
High School education, and grew up listening to pukers, not announcers

WCRB went with a less laid-back approach when they went Top 40 Classical.
Still not "announcing" but a lot less affected.

As for public radio announcers, I find the current fad at attempting to be conversational
to be downright annoying and unlistenable.

Ding ding. Ding ding. "Stereo 97. WJIB. From the Boston waterfront. With beautiful music."
Ding ding. Ding ding.

WCRB before going Public had a great station ID:
{Beethoven's 9th, 2nd Movement}
{dumm-dumm} At your home,
{dumm-dumm} at the office,
{typani-dumm-dumm} or in your car...
Yes, they were Top 100, but that was a great ID.

At WHRB, the kids are trained to be adequate announcers, but when Dave Elliott announces, it brings back memories of Lurtsema or William (?) Pierce the late great Met announcer. Dave conveys the library of music knowledge in his head directly to me. IMHO this is radio's best usage.

William Pierce was the long time voice of the Boston Symphony. You may be thinking of Peter Allen or his predecessor, Milton Cross, at the Met.

"We're the number one station in the demographic media buyers want the most: young and stupid." It's great to hear all those ads for male gland enlargement, snake oil diet drugs, tax evasion and financial irresponsibility specialists, etc.
