Buffalo People that should be in the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame

Taylor & Moore - WPHD 103.3. A morning duo in the late 70’s through the 80’s.
Jon Summers - WKBW 1520/WKBW-TV/Various Other Radio Stations - Midday jock at KB in the mid/late 70’s to 80’s, AM Buffalo co-host, voice talent.
Craig Matthews - Multiple radio stations from the 70’s through 2000’s. Most notably at WHTT, WKBW. Great pro who knew the music he was playing.
Buddy Shula - WYRK 106.5, WECK 1230, WUSW 1270 - 40 year career in radio- both on-air and in sales and management. The guy knows radio,
Janet Snyder - WKSE 98.5 - Nearly 40 years in Buffalo radio, Very successful morning show.
Tom Bauerle - WGR550/WBEN 930 - Almost 40 years in Buffalo radio. Very distinctive - you can’t mistake him for anybody else.

Just to name a few that come to mind…

I think this is a great question, and I would like to add to it. First, I am already in the Buffalo HOF Class of 2022, but thank you. I can think of far more deserving people. The thing we have to ask ourselves that the Buffalo Broadcasters do not is WHY should someone go in the HOF. What is the criteria? Is it because someone has kept their job for 40 years? Is it because everyone likes the person? Is it because someone raised money for charity? In my opinion, there are PLENTY of people who have no business being in the HOF. My question what be "What is the difference this person has made in Buffalo Broadcasting? How can they NEVER be replaced for their contribution." Just because they kept a job for a long time does not mean they are Hall of Fame material.

This 1000%. Bulldog has been on for over 30 years and has gotten only marginally better. Longevity, especially in an age of no competition, is by no means an automatic induction.
 
Shocked that Taylor & Moore are not in it. Craig Matthews is a very worthy broadcaster. I think Janet is already in. Bauerle always eschewed the group (he hates everybody, anyway, so no loss here). I think Bill Saurer is worthy. Sharon Metz should be in it. How about Chet Musialowski? Is Dave May in it (should be). Anita West, Cindy Chan, Slick Tom Tiberi, John Hager? Opie? Don Dussias? Again, what are the criteria? How have potential nominees changed the landscape of Buffalo Broadcasting? A person who just does their job does not qualify in my view. A person who has changed the dynamic does qualify.

Ask yourself how these people have changed the dynamic other than doing a good job, and being with the company a while.

Ken Johnson changed the dynamic of WYRK. He have a country western format to a much broader country format and took it to number one. It still remains there. Raised thousands for volunteer fire companies thru jamborees.

Taylor and Moore changed the morning show landscape and created a show that was talking about things and doing things that changed the dynamic

Slick Tom Tiberi invented a show geared to a specific audience. He found a way to entertain in spite of corporate restraints. He did what others can’t.

Dave Universal a passionate PD who took Kiss to their highest levels and made the station a way of life thru his passion. Every detail was important. Created events like the BO GEO at the fair. These things require THINKING.

I think we have this illusion that just become people have a name, or do their job well, or own a radio station deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. What does it really mean when we are nominating people just for a job well done? Show me how your changed the industry and dynamic. That’s a Hall of Famer.

This Buffalo Broadcaster Association is ridiculous. The goal of their nomination process is “who can bring in the must sponsor money”, and who has the most friends. What well deserving broadcasters are actually on this broadcasting nominating committee?

Since they have used up all the old broadcasters names, they literally search for names they can put in. That’s because half they put in do not deserve it. They did nothing to change the course of anything.

When I was on the board, I was at these meetings. It’s a total beauty pageant.

Release last week, the BBA announced a MASS, one-time induction of over 100 deceased broadcasters. Names on the list date back to the 1920s and include people that recently passed away including Gary Deeb:

There are some rules that the BBA follows re: Hall of Fame inductions, or at least there were in the past. First, people have to be nominated. It's my understanding that living nominees have to agree and provide at least a basic bio. I know of people who have declined the latter requirement. Maybe they'll be reconsidered for the next "make good" list. As it is, I defy anybody to identify more than half of the people listed above. If you can, you're either collecting Social Security or posting from the Great Beyond.

He worked middays at WKBW/1520 in the mid-1960s. BTW, it was in Buffalo where Rod started wearing the brightly colorful and sequined sport jackets that were his calling card on The Price Is Right; he did this for the personal appearances he made emceeing teen dances and concerts.
