So would the NCAA regarding its basketball tournament. The BCS is probably tied for third with the World Series, after the Super BowlTM Big Game (really the whole NFL playoffs) and March Madness.
Rating say otherwise. Last year's BCS title game outrated the NCAA Basketball championship game and every game of the World Series.
Last year's game was Alabama vs Texas - two undefeated schools with huge national followings. The game was on ABC, not ESPN. This game won't have the stature of any previous year's game since Auburn and Oregon don't have the following that
any of the teams (Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, USC, & Virginia Tech) in the previous games had. Auburn might be at the interest level of VaTech and Tennessee, but Oregon is almost a non-entity outside Pac-10 country.
Football junkies, gamblers, & alumni of the two schools will like it, but will it attract casual fans, especially in the northeast, where college football isn't exactly high-profile to begin with? Not as likely as in previous years, but being on a Monday instead of a Thursday night should help.
