Phil Hendrie returns 6/25 - Is there a broadcaster in town who will sign him?

According to Phil Hendrie's website...he is returning to radio for the Talk Radio Network starting June 25th, and his show will be for overnights. His show will have the same characters plus a mess of new ones he has concocted in his year off.

Do you suppose there is even ONE broadcaster in the valley with the stones to put him on, even knowing he'll never get big numbers, he'll just have the best, most original show on America's air?

Overnights is a good spot for him. He's not good for a news-talk station but would be good competition for Coast-to-Coast. KFYI's out since they carry C-t-C. KTAR-FM has Jim Bohannon but Hendrie might be better (most of KTAR's aged core audience is in bed by midnight anyway).

What's left? KXAM? KZON? KFNX? Could TMISU stick him on 860 at least for the time being if they were to sign him up, then move him to 92.3 once their deal with Bohannon is up (whenever that is)?

I'll be listening, even if its on teh intrawebs.

Phoenix never got Hendrie, but then again, Phoenix never gets much.

Could he go back to Free FM and they can just get rid of the replays of Leykis' show and whoever else after midnight? I do agree night time is best for his show. It'd be nice to not have to listen to Denver's 850 KOA at 3am and deal with a bunch of static every few minutes just to hear Hendrie. ;D

Legend City: are you sure that Hendrie was never on in Phoenix? I used to listen to him quite often, and I know it wasn't always on KFI. I think maybe he was on the Zone around 10 to 11 p.m.

I think he meant that Phoenix never understood Hendrie. I'm not so sure about that. I think a lot of folks here didn't even know he was on the air. I think one reason why Hendrie was never very successful here was that there's really no place for him on a prominent station here. My problem wasn't necessarily with him or his show, but since he was doing comedy/parody, he didn't belong on news/talk stations, including his flagship KFI.

But there aren't many general entertainment radio stations anymore. KXAM is probably the closest thing to that type of format, and we know what a joke that station is. Memo to TMISU: Take my suggestion about putting Hendrie on 860 and maybe try some kind of entertainment format there.

He was on XTRA 910 a couple of years ago, before moving to KZON.

I have nothing but the highest regard for Phil Hendrie, a true pioneer in the industry (and I only give that distinction to about two broadcasters). I really hope that Phil will be heard in the Valley--preferably on a station that can actually be heard in the middle of the night--which rules out just about every AM station in Phoenix. Free-FM might not be around by June 25th, so I don't think he'll be aired over there, not that I believe they would carry his show live anyway as that would cut in to their super-talent ratings juggernaut "Big O and Dukes" and "the Best of Tom Leykis", because we all can't get enough of that garbage. So, to answer your question, I am rather doubtful that he will be heard in Phoenix anytime soon... which is ashame.

Phil was on KFYI for a bit many years ago, then disappeared for a little while before being put on Xtra Sports 910 from 10p-1a, which seemed like an odd place for him, but certainly preferable to hearing JT the Brick. Of course his last few months before his year away from radio he was heard on Free(of all ratings)FM from 8p-11p. Phil is a sophisticated talent, which means that generally speaking the Phoenix audience won't truly appreciate his brilliance.

I meant that Phoenix never "got" Phil.

I used to listen to him on the sometimes strong, sometimes weak feed from KFI 640 for years before he syndicated.

KFYI had him not live at nights, and it mystified the bluehairs that listened to John Dayl. Then, he went late not live on sports radio, which was a bad fit, then Free FM which no one listens to.
