Philadelphia Arbitron Radio Ratings: February 2012

aaand

WPEN is now the lowest rated commercial FM in Philadelphia with a 1.7 on PEN-AM-FM.

Surprising drop from WIOQ, but WRDW has been spinning more much more Top 40 then Urban recently, I actually find myself enjoying it over Q102 recently.

Also, where is the audience on RFF coming from?

So, question is... What is going to happen to The Fanatic?

WIOQ down slightly, WRDW up. Those two are within half a point of each other now.

WIP-A-F is at a combined 3.4, down from 3.7 last month. WPEN-A-F also down to a 1.7. It's February, though. Sports are terrible in February. I'm waiting to see the April numbers.

WPHT up a tic to 2.4, but cume still hovering at 362,500. WHYY, by comparison, cumes at 411,200.

WMMR's 5.6 (up a tic from 5.5, which was up huge from the Holiday 4.6) is impressive. They've gotten back nearly everything they lost after November.

Nothing. The Fanatic isn't going anywhere

Agree to disagree, Seltzer? This isn't the thread nor the ratings period to dispute this.

That thread would be the one that dissects the bottom line financial results, which are not predicated on these numbers. But, of course, that thread doesn't exist--and that fact alone should be enough to temper discussions of the Fanatic being ripe for some kind of imminent change. (At least among those that understand there's more to it than meaningless overall numbers.)

Clearly this station isn't gonna make it much longer, but keep inmind because it bills higher then a music format, it is probably still making more money then the other lower rated stations such hot107, and maybe even ben-fm. So just because its last, doesn't mean its 1st to go. Ben is also owned by GM, so wouldn't suprise me if they did something with that first. Hope not, cause I actually like Ben, but they're the 4th lowest Philly station.

True.

Surprising drop from WIOQ

Really?, a 0.1 is a 'surprise drop' in 6+? Get real. RDW share went up slightly, but cume is still declining actually.

Also, where is the audience on RFF coming from?
Again, really? They went up decently and cume is still on the rise; may even break a million in a book or two. Radio 104.5 can be found in many places publicly, and is exactly how you format an Alternative station to appeal not only to men but women as well. Proves alternative rock radio is not dead. NYC could learn a thing or two.

So, question is... What is going to happen to The Fanatic?

For now, nothing.

And Ben costs, what, a nickel to run? ;)

"Do something" sounds all well and good, but the question is...do what? Set aside for a monent whether the Fanatic of Ben has the better (or worse) bottom line (not ratings, not billings...bottom line). Either way, where is there an actual, viable likely better option for GM? What out there could be considered a good gamble for a better return on investment?

Maybe talk, starting with Beck and Hannity, and building from there. But even then, the question bcomes, is there a viable audience? 1210 isn't exactly setting the world on fire as the primary talk game in town--they weren't before they dumped Beck/Hannity and they're not now. To be successful with talk, GM would have to do something more than pry away a sliver of the angry old guys listening to angry old guys.

That leads to music formats. They've got a nice thing going with the WMGK/WMMR combo. Classic hits is well covered. Adult contemporary...we saw how that turned out. This market can support one country station, but a second? Not likely. Ditto altenative. Then cast aisde the fantasy formats, and what are you left with? Whetever it is would have to run on a shoestring (and they already have that in Ben), and would need to deliver better target demos (which aren't reflected here).

BEN's a pretty shaky station, it's been top ten and bottom ten so often. I doubt with it's given success rate it won't go away.

I also meant on RFF, which stations are losing to RFF? I love that station, respect it, and actually think it's on the rise.

What not a greatest hits format similar to WSOX in York. A good alternative to WOGL, might be a good fit for BEN-FM.

Yeah, York's FMs 103.3 and 96.1 come in really well in Chester County.

Harrisburg's 106.7 also comes in in Chester and Montgomery counties.

I remember that, Chester County is a great place with tropo. I can get Pittsburgh AM's even.

So the business proposition there is to take some fraction of WOGL's audience by doing essentially what they're already doing? Right now, you're already getting probably a similar number to what you can peel away from 98 (on the optimistic side).

greater media is not flipping the fanatic if its making money why change it

If a business is making money selling T-Shirts, and they could make more money sellind Sweaters, wouldn't they change?

The Fanatic obviously does not have much time left.

"Obviously?" What makes it "obvious?"

Well, ever since WIP-FM they've been in the bottom five... Look at how low the audience continues to drop. I'm not sure what else to think about this. I'm going to try and find out about the demographics and if they're #1 in anything. I'd love to find out the stations billing too.

Setting aside that it's irrelevant if they're "number one in anything," the fact that we do not have access to "bottom line data proves the point there is nothing "obvious" about that earlier statement.
