Philadelphia has 5 radio stations nominated for 2018 Marconi awards

I notice they discriminate against the Alternative format...hmmm

For a Marconi award, a station has to be "ahead of the crowd" in its category. Alternative stations have been nominated before. KROQ has received the award, for example.

And the categories are broad... "rock" covers classic rock, alternative, AAA and other variants.

The "Spanish" Marconi covers Regional Mexican, Spanish CHR, Tropical, Spanish AC, Spanish Adult Hits, Spanish language Sports, Spanish language talk, Spanish language regional oldies, etc.

There is no discrimination there.

WPST Princeton? They go by where the studios are located?!

Is KYW regularly nominated in the News/Talk category? I hate to sound negative but I was surprised to see it there. When I've heard them over the past few years, it seems like such a cheapened, hollow version of its former self. At any rate, I hope they beat New Jersey 101.5! Personal opinion of course...but I listened to them for a few minutes recently and I was literally disgusted. (By the host; not the unnecessarily aggressive reverb.)

Stations are identified by the city of license or the metro they are rated in. Standard industry practice.

It’s a highly successful major market news station, and the category is obviously focused as much on listener acceptance as content.

How legitimate are the Marconis? In the newspaper business, I've heard of regional press associations' "Newspaper of the Year" awards that are, basically, rotated among dues-paying member papers so that every one of them can boast of being a Newspaper of the Year for a while. Is this the case with the Marconis or is there an independent panel doing the judging?

Very sad that Q102 isn't nominated. Oh well, maybe next year!
