Philadelphia Newsman Don Lancer, Longtime Fixture On KYW 1060, Dead At 68

John Holcomb II said:
Not eh the same guy that was on Eagle 106 WEGX and is not on Bauston's Mix 98.5, right?
No, that's John Lander. By the way, it's Boston. And Mix is now Mix 104.1. 98.5 is The Sports Hub now. I was up in Boston in 1999 for my grandmother's funeral and listened to Lander's Nut Hut that morning and he replayed a nut cracker that he did down here in Philly on John Bolaris.

Back to Mr. Lancer...

He was at 'KB in Buffalo during-- and part of-- the station's legendary original 1968 "War Of The Worlds" broadcast.

Also, he briefly (1996-97) did late night talk radio on 1210, during WPHT's infancy.

I've never been much of a morning person, but on rare occasions when I was forced to be up I'd make a point of tuning to KYW just to catch a Don Lancer/Fred Sherman business report. Ten times more entertaining than the fools on most of those "wacky morning shows" in my opinion.

Right before his diagnosis he had started a blog, but I hadn't seen it updated in some time.

Rest in peace...

Don Lancer was a mainstay in the KB Radio news department during those years as an anchor and street reporter. Great pipes, superb writer and outstanding delivery. Yes, he was part of Jeff Kaye's WKBW re-presentation of War of the Worlds. Lancer was a classy guy to give up his job so KYW could retain another news person. RIP.

I remember his last day on KYW. He was given the opportunity to say his goodbyes. And it's true, he was a Philly broadcaster I DID look forward to hearing.

From start to finish, Don Lancer was a class act. And yes, listening to him and Fred Sherman was a treat. To end your career by leaving so a younger co-worker could keep their job was a high mark of his radio days.

Don, R.I.P.
