Philadelphia Radio Legend Hy Lit Dies at 73

Bob Pantano is paying tribute to Hy Lit right now on WOGL 98.1 FM on his Saturday Night Dance Party show. I will always remember Hyski doing the top 20 countdown on WOGL back in the early 90s. It was a great show to listen to.

We have suspended the replay of last night's show in order to run a Hy Lit Retrospective on audio18.com for the remainder of the weekend.

The loop includes numerous Hyski airchecks, one of which is the famous last hour of Wibbage, as well as our 2+ hour interview with Hy and Sam in studio on June 16th, 2006.

Please check it out sometime this weekend and listen to something you will never hear again eminating from a terrestrial radio station.

The replay of last night's show will run throughout the remainder of the weekend on AM 930 The Cockroach, which can be heard at myspace.com/roachradio.

Shocking News! Truly a Radio Legend in --- Philadelllllllllllllphia-- as Hy would often scream! Rock on HYSKI!!!!!!!

What a legend in Philly radio! What a career! One of the true greats in Philly and beyond.. I remember watching the "The HyLit Show" from the late-Channel 48 (WKBS), seen here in Boston on Channel 56 (WKBG). He will be missed. Rest in peace, Hyski. My thoughts and prayers are with Sam and his family.

Note to FOX 29's Joyce Evans....

The man's name is HY LIT. It is not pronounced as "High Light". Not only did she do it once, but TWICE. Im sure if it were someone like Tom Joyner, she'd probably have to take the day off as she would be inconsolable. Way to know your market, ignorant!!!!!!

UNREAL! She said HY LIGHT twice? and nobody at tv29 corrected her? all concerned deserve to be fired! (BUT I bet Hy is laughing! he knew what shape radio and tv are in today!)

I guess the geniuses over at FOX 29 pulled the video from the website.

Absolutely pathetic. I'm not surprised though. What do you expect from a fourth-rate news operation?

I was so sad to read about Hy's passing. For me it was such a gift to be able to work with him at WOGL a few years ago. Hy was a gentleman and a great Disc Jockey (as everyone knows) as well as a moving force for my own lure in getting into radio. I remember ALWAYS listening to his show on WIBBAGE while I was a high school student in my hometown of Reading. It was homework and Hy every night somewhere nestled in between 6 and 10 PM. I'm happy we exchanged emails over the past 6 months...he was never too busy to answer.
I thought the KYW radio story was excellent...very complete and done with dignity.
A great one is gone forever, but a man who will be forever remembered.

I grew up listening to Hy Lit on WIBG. I met Hy once
when he and Sam were in Atlantic City at WUSS.
I just played one of his jingles on New Jersey 101.5 and
said goodbye. Truly one of the best !

Sam:

Words cannot describe our overwhelming sense of loss at the passing of your dad,
and a wonderful friend of WIBG. Sam. we thank you and your dad for bringing back the
spirit of WIBG, even during the brief Wibbage Oldies redux at LifeRadio1020 WIBG.

Your dad was truly one of my radio heros.. a giant and a legend in his time, and
sounded as powerful, commanding and fresh in 2007 here on WIBG1020 as he did back in his
Philadelphia days. Our listeners responded with overwhelming joy at the return of
Hy Lit, and Dad's legacy will live in our hearts forever.

I was one of the "fringies", a guy who grew up in Colts Neck-Freehold, mid-way between
New York City and Philadelphia. Hyski was always my favorite, including the other
DJ greats like Dan Ingram and Herb Oscar Anderson. Hy's dominance in the Northeast
broadcast band speaks for his energy, enthusiam and passion for this wonderful
business. Hy's great attribute was to bring radio.. the theatre of the mind.. real.. personable and
intimately personal. Television could never do that.

Sam.. we are thankful for your passion and bravado in keeping your dad's memory
alive in the United States.

God Bless you

RIP Hy, it'd be nice if reelradio.com placed some subscription free airchecks on the main page so we could hear the magic.

is it known who played rock first on philly radio --- Hy or Joe? they both were great but there is no dispute that Joe later played standards while Hy kept on rockin till the end! (Hy Lit--- Joe Niagara)

on the internet I saw a list that said Hy was on WAMS-Wilmington in 1968 and on WHUM-Reading in 1976. right? why in the world would no philly station have him on then! Hard to believe!

The great Hyski's popularity declined for awhile after 68 and well into the 70's especially when it came to radio. Same with the other original good guys. Some went on to successful careers off the air as PD's and some just went.
My family once took a trip out to Hershey Pa. one day back in the summer of 74' when we heard Hyski on a Reading station. I can remember my dad mentioning after he came on the air, "Boy, He use to be big". Whatever happened?
He was on and off the rimshot stations in the Delaware and beyond valley were the heart of the mainstream Philly listeners couldn't reach him until the the beginning of the 80's when he jumped at the advantage of the soon to become WPGR. But even the best go cold. But since 81' you just can't keep a good man down. It was a non-stop raging comeback way into the millenium.
