The November 2018 ratings (October 11 - November 7)

The December 2018 ratings (November 8 - December 5) will be out on 12/26/2018. This month's ratings will be released at 5 PM today I think, but I wanted to get the thread posted early. Please feel free to share your thoughts on the ratings here in this thread

Definitely like seeing the uptick in KYW's numbers, and the same for WHYY. Radio 104.5 WRFF ticked up too, which is good to see. WPHT stayed steady, and WPEN ticked up too. The real note is Ben-FM's decrease in numbers. 2.5 to 2.1 which isn't huge, but notable.

Also, these are the first numbers the new Breeze 106.1- and we saw a rise in numbers! 2.7 to 3.0. The real book that'll show us how it's going will be the December/ Holiday ones, but it looks like the Breeze might be working out. Other than that, normal numbers for everyone else.

If anything ever happens to BEN FM I think another adult hits station would eventually pop back up. BEN fms ratings been fine overall this year though

Those are still the October numbers. The November numbers won't be released until 5PM.

Also, the November book ran from October 11-November 7. WISX flipped on November 12. So the numbers we will see for 106.1 will be Real 106.1's final month.

The numbers are out as of 5 PM today. Feel free to discuss the ratings for November 2018 in Philadelphia.

Not-too-shabby jump for WOGL. Nice uptick for WMMR as well. WXTU almost entirely made up last month's steep drop. I assume WUSL will soon see an uptick resulting from the exit of Real 106.1. Speaking of Real 106.1: Is 3.3--its final number--also its highest number?

I really don't know what to make of WBEB's fluctuations. They don't seem to have made any significant changes. Tied for fourth after being at or near the top for...geez, I don't even know how many months. I'm sure they'll be making some changes after Christmas in the face of competition (albeit softer competition) but I'm thinking the combination of factors will only push them further down the list. Placement on "the list" i$n't all that important, a$ we know. But these can't be happy signals.

The December and Holiday books will be interesting but not terribly useful for trends. We got Christmas music a couple days into the December book and that always upends things.

Not too shabby - considering the fact that 'OGL is following the same 80s-based format as their sister classic hits station in NYC......and also considering the fact that they "dumped" Harvey Holiday....

To respond to myself (LOL)... Real 106.1 was ranked #3 in 18-34 (best share in over a year) and tied with B101!

BTW: B101's drop wasn't just in 6+ and 18-34. They also fell in both 18-49 (#2, but almost three shares below the station at #1) and 25-54 (#6). Heck, maybe this is the right time for an older-skewing AC. Older stations seem to be doing great.

No one has ever doubted that older stations would get ratings. That's never been the issue. The bigger concern is can they make money?

Agencies are still focused on 25 to 54. If the audience skews higher, you'll start to hear infomercials and 1-800 spots, just like talk stations.

I'm just saying that an older-skewing AC might not be as bad an idea as many had suggested. I'm sure there are plenty of studies out there about overall terrestrial radio use by demos...and though I have read maybe one of them, I'd posit that as the youngsters continue moving toward tech, 25-54 will become more important than ever. Clearly, that's where The Breeze is hoping to have an impact. Yet to be seen is exactly how that'll work out. I'm in the upper-half of that demo and I have absolutely no use for that library!

Any station focusing on the 70s is going to have an abundance of over 55s. The problem with that audience is they hate advertising, especially the kind of advertising that's aimed at them: reminding them about their aging prostate and need for Medigap plans.

The worst kind of prostate.

Also in the upper half, and love me some tech. Not just the young ‘uns.

I’m trying to sample the Breeze periodically, and so far finding it a “one song I like...two or three that make me gag” ratio. And this from someone with a very high tolerance for the cheesiest of 80s songs. That’s not to say they’re going about it wrong by any means, just that it’s not clicking for me, anecdotally. By far, Today’s More B, or whatever they are, in regular format appealed to me for much longer stretches.

I think it is simply that I prefer WOGL’s and Ben’s 80s centric approaches than the Breeze. I tend to want pep and tempo, with an occasional slower tune in the, uh, mix than the other way around.

Lots of flavors out there. It’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Haha. Sorry about that. I should have been more careful considering I am currently (and have all week) been listening to Christmas music...right here in Philadelphia...via Amazon Music. LOL.

100%. B101 had become a "turn it on and leave it on" type of station for me but I fear that will no longer be the case as they attempt to react to The Breeze. Still, they'd get more time spent from me simply by virtue of not playing "Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher" by Rita Coolidge (for the love of God). I have totally stopped checking in with them on the radio or via stream...but I will say from checking their playlist that it does appear they may be doing what I think needed to be done: Plenty of stuff from the '80s, '90s, and '00s and less wacky '70s stuff. I mean, it's not entirely gone. A 10-second look at the site offended my senses with the words "Looks Like We Made It" by Barry Manilow. Who wants to hear that song?!

I know I keep mentioning "Something To Talk About" by Bonnie Raitt and "Come To My Window" by Melissa Etheridge but I think I'm gonna keep saying it because...where are they? Maybe I'm nuts but I think those songs epitomize what the format should be. I'm just me though. [/QUOTE]

I agree. The Breeze--at least on day one--seemed to want to be what we used to refer to as "sleepy" and that just doesn't work anymore. Soft? Sure! Relaxing? OK! But there are too many buttons to press for any one of them to be pumping out Sleepy.

Plus if the station simply becomes background music, it won't be successful as a platform for advertising.

Some of the ad campaigns may become startling to the sleepy listeners.

Your love has lifted me higher?

Oh dear lord.

Where is Muskrat Love?

I get the “relaxing” thing being beat into our brains, and ok, I get it works overall so you do it here. But the positioning, personally, just isn’t resonating with me, and it turns my significant other, squarely in the demo, off even more. I don’t have anything better to offer, but it, anecdotally, makes me think “old fart.”

I love me some relaxation, but reminding me some of the music I enjoy is, in fact, old fart music isn’t endearing me to them. Exactly the way “oldies” turned folks off, I suspect.

I suppose it’s better than “EZ favorites.”
