Phillies games move to WIP 94.1 FM for 2016 season

Another reason for out-of-market fans who used to get the 1210 signal at night to go the satellite radio/wireless stream route, I guess. Whether this move gets the Phils a younger, more advertiser-desirable audience ... who knows? A competitive baseball team would help much more than an FM signal will.

There was no reason for both WPHT and WIP to carry the games. Only advantage is that 1210's signal goes further and the skywave at night. However a lot of nearby markets also carry the Phils. WPHT does local programming, with the exception of Rush all day until 9PM and Ken Matthews and Walter(Sabo)Sterling do local talk on weekend nights, when many stations run syndicated shows or infomercials. A six hour old Sean Hannity is wasted on weekday nights. Would be nice to have something local, now that there will be no more Phillies on 1210.

Here's another article explaining why 1210 WPHT is no longer airing the Phillies games: http://www.bizjournals.com/philadel...phillies-1210am-cbs-radio-broadcast-deal.html

Interesting. I wonder if WFAN will be doing the same with its Yankees broadcasts in the near future, although the AM and FM there are a simulcast rather than stations with separate programming. The Yankees' radio network is extensive, so nobody in the market (or just outside it) will ever miss a game even if the NYC flagship is FM only.

So MLB is pushing teams to ditch AM, eh? I understand the NFL has been doing that for some time now, with great success. More nails being pounded into the AM coffin. In 10 years or less, a band full of Godcasters and leased ethnics, some running 50,000 watts. Geez, why not just turn the band over to the hams?

None of which I can get easily at night (same with WIP). And not everyone can afford satellite radio (not that the 1% care). It would just be a white elephant for me anyway. I'll have rely on Yahoo sports, I guess. Now that said...

... this is a good business move. Unfortunately I am not a talk radio connesur [sic], even for sports (too cookie cutter). Nor am I much of music radio connesur [sic] (I have my CDs when I feel like playing them). KYW, WCBS, WTOP (and WBZ and WBBM during wintertime PM commutes) for me.

Mixing formats doesn't help a station. The Mets air on talk WOR-AM in NYC. Even though the team went to the World Series, the radio station didn't get much of a bounce.

Listeners tune in to WPHT with the expectation of hearing news/talk. They tune in to WIP with the expectation of hearing sports. So it makes sense to give them what they want. Mixing formats goes back to the old block programming days when companies were restricted to owning only two stations per market. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the law that changed that.
