PHILLY RATINGS:Bad news for all you Christmas-haters

Sunny got a bounce of more than a point by going all-Christmas so early.

B101 is up almost 1 1/2 points as well.

DAS-FM up almost a point while WRBN is down almost a point!

WMMR takes advantage of market conditions and sees a nice little increase while WYSP drops a bit more to their lowest 12+ number I can even recall off the top of my head.

Power 99 is down quite a bit while Wired & Q102 both rise a tad.

WIP is up nicely.

WMGK saw a nice rebound.

Everything else looks relatively status quo.

BUT THE BIG STORY ON ACTION NEWS

And WPEN continues to slide into a fractional number. Real Oldies PEN was significantly down from Standards PEN. Sports Talk PEN is down even further. And somehow even more people are listening to WIP. Just when you thought Greater Media couldn't screw things up any worse.

Not even close to being the big story. Way too early. The station is still in the building phase. Talk-oriented formats take a couple years to build. We're going to see them same happen at WYSP. They'll trend down while the core audience is built up for the new format.

Winners, Losers, and Lingering Questions

Looking at this in another perspective:

Winners

Christmas Music - B101 back to its normal levels after an off book and Sunny shines brightly.

WDAS-FM - I can't say I monitor them or WRNB enough to tell, but either the novelty of the new station wore off or DAS really gave the listeners a reason to return. I'd love to see how Tom Joyner and Carter & Sanborn matched up.

WMMR - Doubling the audience in a year's time. Radio-One and CBS have helped out, but they are THE Rock station in Philadelphia right now.

WIP - Terrell Owens = Ratings

95.7 - The numbers may be slightly off, but 95.7 hasn't been at this level of consistency in a long, long time.

WPHI - It's taking a little bit of time, but the frequency change has given The
Beat an extra little push upward.

WNTP - Still way off the radar, but another station slowly rising.

Losers

WYSP - It's going to take some time for Free-FM to rebuild its audience as the Rockers shift to MMR and Howard's audience redistributes itself. When the smoke clears, Free-FM should have a nice niche for itself, but will probably take some time to see the numbers it has right now.

Radio-One - Did they stretch the Adult Urban audience too far with WRNB and WPPZ?

Lingering Questions

Will Wired or Q102 grab the bull by the horns and carve out exactly who they want to be?

Is KYW's audience slowly lingering away? With a mild winter so far, and projections for status quo to continue will there be a reason to tune in for school closings?

Will WOGL find a way to get younger without having to blow itself up?

Who does what with 97.5?

Will anybody make an attempt to compete with WPHT?

That's all I have for now...

As much as I hate to say it, based on the numbers B will have to flip earlier next year, at least as early as they did for Christmas 2004. They are down about 1.5 points for Fall '05 compared to their Fall '04 12+ book. It looks like Joseph Galant may finally be right with his Christmas prediction for next year!! You go Joe! :)

For the record the last trend before this book, myself and my potna Dave Sanborn did beat Mr.Joyner ....although it came just as we were shown the door like it does some times in this wacky biz.Steve Harvey 's first book finds him 5th 25-54...the same positon we were in as we left DAS with a slight share increase...
Tom Joyner was down.Actually Michael Baisden was close to double digits this book(his was a bigger story).Look for WMMR to do well in the next book but i wont count out David Lee Roth just yet.

All dependent on DLR I think. If he can't compete with Preston And Steve, and there's no indication that he CAN, YSP falls apart faster than you can say "Barsky In The Morning". Hot Talk is so dependent on the morning show, which is why this whole Free-FM thing is such a gamble without Stern.

> Will Wired or Q102 grab the bull by the horns and carve out

I think Q is about where they want to be, musically. They've managed to present themselves as street enough to blunt Wired's rise, but still mixing in enough Pop and Rock to get that cume up. Music trends are on their side. All they need is the morning show.

Wired's still evolving. Where? I don't think even they know. They're realizing that Q's young end wasn't nearly as vulnerable as they originally thought, and the musical tide is going against them. While 2004 was all about hip-hop, in 2005, Pop and Rock re-established themselves as essential parts of the hit music formula.

Three words: Superhits 98 CAU-FM.

[Julius mode off]

Early results have been very promising for Infinity's 70's-80's stations: WRBQ/Tampa and KFRC/San Fran., which are basically MGK plus Rhythm. I think it's a foregone conclusion that WOGL is moving that way, with or without a name change.

I've heard that P&S beat Stern in the previous book (I've seen no evidence to either support or debunk that). If true, then I would imagine "Roth Radio" is going to have one hell of an uphill climb here in Philly.

> YSP falls apart faster than you can say "Barsky In The

Couldn't we just say "Barsky on the beach?" I'd prefer to see them ditch the whole Talk experiment and go All-Harmonica Instrumentals as opposed to hearing Barsky do mornings at yet another station. Can Roth score numbers so low that even Barsky can improve on them? If history is any indication, I'd assume not.

> Rhythm.

You said a curse word! How'd that get past the filtering software?

Re: Philly Ratings

There was another reason WIP-610 had a good book, and it had nothing to do with people tuning-in for all the talk about T.O.

The other reason for WIP's success is four words: The Flyers Are Back.

Not only is WIP the Flyers' flagship, but the team entered the 2005/2006 season as the heavy favorite to win the 2006 Stanley Cup championship. And since the 1970's, Philadelphia has been a strong market for hockey.

At this writing (January 18th), the Flyers are leading the NHL's Atlantic Division and are also contending for the league's best overall record.
