Picture of the new soon to be released Sony HD radio.

A great looking radio. I hope it performs well. Good performance used to be a given with Sony. Times have changed!

I notice that Amazon is recommending a Terk AM Advantage antenna and some other antennas to go with it.

The do have a great price on the Sangean HDT-1. If I can figure out a way to lock it into analog mode, I may bite some day.

Geeez... you started a seperate thread for this - this Sony is one ugly retro-dude ! Good, now that it is on Amazon we can keep track of its electonics sales ranking, just as with the rest of the non-seller HD radios.

The HDT-1X (which I have on order) allows the listener to choose between analog and digital modes as well as many variations like digital on the right and analog on the left.

Ugly? Well to each their own opinion but as they once said on a Twilight Zone episode, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if you purchase your radios based on their appearence as opposed to their perfomance you get what you deserve. By the way, I think the new Sony looks terrific.

I agree. It's a great looking radio. Don't take Pocket seriously, though...it gives him too much credibility. If you said "great looking", he'd say "ugly". If you said "great sounding", he'd say "crappy sounding". The trick is saying the opposite of what you mean. Then he'll make your point for you ;)

While I'm not into table radios, this Sony is not up to par at least asthetically with Sony products.

About the only HD radio worth noting is the Sangean HDT-1x and even though I have no need for it, it is pleasing to the eye.

Why if HD technology is the future of radio do they install the electronics on cheapy, cheesy box type table radios? I know.. I know... it's early in the game for this technology but geez put these into eye catching, draw you into the aisle and onto the shelves type looks, as the sound at the stores is not going to be it's 'selling point'.

I thought it looked pretty good, assuming it is real wood, not plastic with wood grain. But, I'm a sucker for radios in wooden boxes....

I'm with you. Now if its plastic with wood grain I'd call it cheesy but this being a premium radio I would hope its a real wood radio ala, the KLH.

I love "real wood boxes". You should see my mint condition 1950s Zenith table radio, in blonde wood. It's my FAVORITE radio to just sit and listen to something like All Things Considered, Car Talk, or other talk programs on NPR. It was one of the early "new fm band" radios, and was built with "high fidelity sound". There are even ELECTROSTATIC TWEETERS! Two of 'em!

Yep. I think my favorite was a Grundig AM-FM-SW set. As they said back then, it had very nice “tone." All my favorite radios are in wooden cabinets, including modern ones like the Tivoli. Even my Zenith Trans-Oceanic is a wooden box with some leatherette covering glued on. It sounds "nice" too.

So do I. It is the best looking of all the table models offered yet, but that should be wood for the price.

It should be wood. And whoever said it should have 'analog lock', ditto. EVERY HD RADIO SHOULD HAVE THAT FEATURE! Sometimes (engineering problems, ridiculously low bitrate, etc) the analog channel sounds better. More often, but still rare, sometimes the damn signal won't lock, and bounces back and forth from analog to digital. This has happened to me just a couple of times, but when it did it drove me nuts. ANALOG LOCK isn't a feature. It's a NECESSITY! Just like a stereo-mono switch! A manual option to adjust blend would be great too. Tuners (and preamps) had that feature nearly a half-century ago. Surely we could get it now!

Well this overview of the radio says it comes with a cherry cabinate;

Sony Electronics has taken the plunge into the world of HD radio by unveiling the XDR-S3HD table-top console radio as well as the XT-100HD hideaway tuner module that is compatible with the majority of Sony car stereo systems. The XDR-S3HD was designed to reflect an older era, featuring a cherry table-top cabinet complete with stereo speakers and a large backlit LCD display. Features include AM/FM/HD tuners, an alarm clock, and treble and bass controls among others. The XT-100HD radio tuner is a hideaway module that also feeds artist names, song titles, station names, genre, and other info to the car stereo display. The XDR-S3HD and XT-100HD retails for $200 and $100 respectively when released this July.

200$ is a good price for a radio of this type.

I think we'd all love to see the results from Pocket's Rorschach inkblot test ! ! :D
