Pitchman Billy Mays found dead in his Tampa Home

Famous pitchman found dead this morning. He was 50 years old.... Sad...He was just interviewed for TV news as he got off a US Air flight to Tampa that had blown a tire on landing yesterday....

Wow, I'm shocked. I loved this guy, his infommercials were pretty sweet. I just can't believe that we lost four very well known people in less than a week. Just kind of make you wonder...who's next?

Surely Jeff Laurence will chime in. Often, award winning artistic spots don't sell a darn thing. Billy Mays SOLD product. With a "here's how to order" phone number tagged at the end of each spot, Mays got a report card quickly. Obviously, his spots sold product. Isn't that why people buy advertising?

He might have sold product but I wonder how many viewers turned the channel when he came on.

Guess statistics aren't kept on those, eh?

I did voiceover work with Billy Mays and Sully on several projects in the past year alone. He and Anthony Sullivan were a Direct Response machine, and Billy was the front man. You know he was a marketeer, but we're talking about him so it worked. Most people can also name at least one or two of his products. That speaks volumes for his ability to get you to remember..not always a "high brow" method, but it did work. The complexion of the industry will change again I am sure.

Moreover most don't know what a really nice fellow Billy was. Truly a fun guy to know, and yeah he was over the top, and might have had an abrasive style, but his ego was more of a role he played on TV, and required by anyone who puts himself out there as much and with as much enthusiasm as Billy Mays did.

I feel so bad for his family, the people who really knew him, and the partners and associates of Sullivan Productions for their tragic loss.

If there is anything that the family or the company might need for any reason..I hope they know they have a friend in me.

I agree, I thought maybe the first 3 would of been it. Now we have someone here in Tampa Bay that is gone. I feel for the family, God bless you.

Newsradio 970 WFLA reported Billy Mays death in the 11am local newscast, a full hour before FOX News Radio at noon and nearly two hours before anybody else. Impressive.

I'm sitting here, tempted not to feed the troll you are.

As much as we'd like to think that "content" and "programming" is what moves the media, its salesmanship...move the merchandise...If he wasn't selling, you wouldnt see him.

Kind of like I hope I don't see you. You're pretty insensitive, and coming across as pathetic.

Funny thing, when I heard the news today, the lead-in was, "The man of a thousand voices has died..." To which I immediately thought, "Wait - didn't Mel Blanc die like 15 years ago?" ???
