Planners Nix Proposal For Radio Station Tower Atop Mountain

From The Charlotte Observer 6/11:

Gaston County

Gastonia

For now, concerns about plants, trails and views has trumped the prospect of a new radio station in town.

A plan to double the height of a communications tower atop Crowders Mountain took a hit Thursday when Gastonia's planning commission voted against it.

Commissioners voted not to recommend a change to zoning laws that would allow towers on the mountain to be extended to 250 feet. The Gastonia City Council, which has the final say, will hold a public hearing June 19.

The applicant, Crown Castle International, wants a taller tower to broadcast the signal of a radio station planning to move to Gaston County from Gaffney, SC.

Opponents, including the superintendent of Crowders Mtn. State Park, voiced concern about how a taller tower would affect views of the mountain, sensitive plant species and a trail that runs across part of the tower property.

Do any of you posters know what station this is?

I think it's been discussed on this board before.

IMHO, I'll be at the public hearing.

Doesn't the public interest & community service of a radio station have priority over a few that might be affected by the view of the mountain - there is already a tower farm there, & going 250 ft. higher, with a thin, tall stick isn't going to block the view. Sensitive plant species? There's a trail that ALREADY RUNS ACROSS PART OF THE TOWER PROPERTY. How is extending the tower 250 ft. going to impede on this trail, that is already part of the property?

Thanks.

Also of concern are the millions of birds that will be killed colliding with the tower - drawn to them by those evil red marker lights. Some people are saying the honeybees are being destroyed by radiation from cell towers. Maybe they cause global warming, too.

I think the Observer article provided some somewhat bogus information. Obviously, the application was for the move in of WNOW-FM (ex WAGI) to the present WBAV tower which is located on Crowder's Mountain, right in the middle of Crowder's Mt. State Park. I remember about 10-15 years ago, there was an effort by enviromentalists to have the WBAV tower removed from the mountain. After months of controversy, the tower was allowed to stay, with the stipulation that no modifications could ever be made to the tower. I assume this is the reason the plan was for WBAV and WNOW to share a duplexed antenna--of course, even that would require minor modifications. One thing I don't understand is why an application would have to made to the Gastonia Planning Commission--is Crowder's Mt. within the Gastonia City limits? Well, maybe they have jurisdiction over that area anyway. I don't understand the whole idea that the application was to increase the tower to 250 ft. The tower is already about 250 ft , and the height of the proposed WNOW antenna is exactly the same as the present WBAV antenna! In any event, I'd say WNOW-FM has a serious problem, between enviromentalists who wanted the tower taken down in the first place ( and will now have a another chance to make a stir) and a very antagonistic county government who has made it their business to make life hell for Hispanic residents. Would it be possible for WNOW to put their antenna on one of the TV towers in north Gaston and still city grade Gaffney? Maybe that's the real reason they have now applied to to move WNOW's COL to Bessemer City. BTW, Crown Castle International owns and operates 23,500 communications towers around the world, including, apparently, the WBAV tower.

Nope, you're wrong on all accounts. It's the smoke from our backyard grilling that's doing all the environmental damage. Have you not heard of Congress's plan to change the Fourth of July to occur every 4 years and doing away with Feb 29th(as the leap year date)? They figure that grilling on The Fourth will only happen every 4 years, along with Fireworks, too. ;D
