Play by play radio sports in Philadelphia

I think its time that I let everyone know how I feel about the following. I'm very angry that even though tonight's MLB all star game is on TV , I can't hear it on a Philadelphia radio station, 920 AM WPHY from Trenton is airing it but it has no signal in the Philadelphia city limits at night. I'm tired of the fact that these Philadelphia radio stations don't want to air every national play by play sports broadcasts like this and winding up on a station we can't get like WPHY, its like that on some local sports play by play broadcasts too. This is not good for the 6th largest radio market. Philadelphia radio needs to wake up and start airing these broadcasts on their stations with clear signals. I'm tired of people saying to me that they don't care about it, the fact is that you should. I know every game is on TV but it should be the same for radio, especially in the top 20 radio markets.

Now that you mention it, Julius, they did not ask Jody Mac about this when he was the Radio Racket. I wonder what he would have said is the reason they don't.

Did you ever think ESPN owns the rights to the game? Lets take numbers away from our station and give them to WIP or WPEN and get their ratings even higher.

Julius whines: I'm very angry that even though tonight's MLB all star game is on TV , I can't hear it on a Philadelphia radio station, 920 AM WPHY from Trenton is airing it but it has no signal in the Philadelphia city limits at night.

My response: Perhaps ESPN has the radio rights to the game...only ESPN affiliates are allowed to carry it. It just so happens the Philadelphia affiliate is 920 AM. Even if the ESPN affiliate was on a station within the City, you would find something else to complain about. Why not write a letter to WHAT or WURD and demand they become the ESPN affiliate. Those stations are Philadelphia stations. If that happened, that would be one less racist-minded radio station we would have clogging up the airwaves.

Julius continues to whine: I'm tired of the fact that these Philadelphia radio stations don't want to air every national play by play sports broadcasts like this and winding up on a station we can't get like WPHY, its like that on some local sports play by play broadcasts too.

My response: not every single nationally broadcast game is worthy of being aired in Philadelphia. For example: most people in this market don't give a rat's ass about Kansas City at Seattle...or San Diego vs. Houston.

More Julius drivel: This is not good for the 6th largest radio market. Philadelphia radio needs to wake up and start airing these broadcasts on their stations with clear signals.

My response: perhaps there are no other stations in the market with "clear signals" that want to carry ESPN programming.

Even more nonsense: I'm tired of people saying to me that they don't care about it, the fact is that you should. I know every game is on TV but it should be the same for radio, especially in the top 20 radio markets.

My response: Julius, get over it. No, we shouldn't care about anything you care about. Most of us aren't posting just for the sake of posting. Not everyone is going to agree with you. Just like not everyone is going to agree with me. Deal with it. Not every radio market (top 20 or not) is not interested in every single ESPN Radio play by play broadcast. Again, not many people out here won't care about such games as the Giants vs. Dodgers...just like people out west really won't care about the Phillies vs. Mets. I'm sorry you don't like what we tell you, but it's reality. Life deals us sh*t sandwiches every day...and we have to eat them.

Memo to Kyle: Sounds like we have the making of a great new feature for the Radio Racket. Instead of the Julius Manifesto, Point-Counterpoint with Shawn and Julius. Might be great radio.

Something to add to the book of Radio Aphorisms.

That's very good and funny. Queue the audio clip of "Jane you ignorant slut."
(old SNL reference, not an insult)
(SNL = Saturday Night Live)
(old is a relative term ... old in TV years, we on the other hand are not, no sir, not me ;D )

These topics Julius brings up are the same old, stale topics he brings up all time. I have proved time and time again to moderators and on here publicly that he's posting just for the sake of posting. Ever since being reinstated to this board, complaining about 920 AM and ESPN Radio is one of the top subjects on his agenda. We keep giving him the same answers over and over. Where you folks think it's funny, and how it's probably just as funny that I respond to him, I'm trying to drill into the heads of the moderators that this guy needs to go....now. He was banned from TV News Talk for similar silly posts, however, those useless posts dealt with TV. Julius claimed for years that he didn't watch TV, but yet he still complains about it. He has said for years that he doesn't care how radio works, but yet he still complains about radio. Why is posting here then? Why is he allowed here then? I have answered his questions. If he doesn't like the answers, too bad. Get over it.

WRONG, I have been watching TV for most of my life.

At the risk of starting a firestorm, I agree with Julius.

This is the fifth-largest market (or are we sixth now?) in the country.

We don't get the All-Star Game, except on WPHY (a station that doesn't even appear on ESPNRADIO.COM's affiliate list). Gee, I wonder what riveting programming occupied 1210's signal last night. It sure wasn't a Phillies game. Maybe a repeat of Rush the Windbag? Or perhaps an example of the most pointless waste of 50kw -- a tape-delayed broadcast of a *call-in* show. WHAT'S THE POINT???

In New York, the game was on 1050, which you can't get around here, except maybe in KYW's null northeast of the city, and even then not very well. We didn't get the Stanley Cup playoffs, either. I don't think they were even on WPHY; they moved around a bit in New York, sometimes on 1130 or 1560, depending on baseball schedules, but when they were on 1050, again, no luck. I guess the local team's hockey affiliate only cares about the playoffs when the Flowers (oops, Flyers) are in them. Which means "not very often" lately.

In the immortal words of Bart Simpson, "this sucks".

Thank you, Surf. Put a leash on the Mussolini of the Message Boards and I'd be happy once to again to provide bon mot for your board, too. ;)

Fred/Mike: they won't put a leash on the fool that you're talking about...just like the moderators here won't put a leash on Julius. Don't hold your breath.

EVERY other major market?
This sounds like a Juliusism. Did you check? Do you know this for a fact?

Why should I have to pay for XM when every other major market has over-the-air coverage ?

You know what....I'm going to send you a petition, on it will have mandatory broadcast of every Philly profession al sports coverage of everything, every game, everytime...... Yes the LaCross team , the tennis team, The indoor and outdoor Soccer teams, How come there's no Reading Phillies games, Badminton games from St. Joeseph College, even from Byrn Athyn college, the Philadelphia Phanthoms, Hershey Bears and we can schedule them all with the Phillies , 76er's and Flyers.....HAVE I COVERED EVERYTHING! This it what we need. The hell with chic's....I want to spend everynight by my high sensitive AM radio listening and rooting for these games. And demand that the radio info board sponsors them, because us postees will be the only one's who care and listen except for Julius. I sure showed them.
