Political ads are flooding Hulu, Roku and other streaming services,

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/02/20/hulu-roku-political-ads-streaming/

The ad that interrupted some Hulu subscribers as they watched the NBC comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” this month opened with a clip of President Trump speaking.

“The ‘deep state’ is trying to inject our health system with socialist price controls,” a narrator then interjected, before a banner flashed at the bottom of the screen: “TEXT ‘SOCIALISM SUCKS’ TO 41490.”

But neither FreedomWorks, the conservative group behind the ad, nor Hulu, a television-and-movie streaming giant, is required to reveal much more to the public about the 30-second spot or whom it targeted, leaving watchdogs and regulators fearful that federal election laws aren’t fit for the digital age — and that voters remain vulnerable to manipulation.

Four years after Russian agents exploited popular online platforms to push propaganda, sow unrest and promote the Trump candidacy, the U.S. government has made virtually no progress on bringing more transparency to paid political speech. The risks remain high that voters could be duped and deceived by foreign governments, U.S. candidates and advocacy groups — particularly online, where major regulatory gaps exist.

The article talks about how political ads are handled on streaming services though. When I go on Youtube and Twitch I see a lot of Tom Steyer and Mike Bloomberg campaign ads before the shows I like to watch on these venues. For Tom Steyer given that he is from California I see more of his ads given that in the past he would fund political ads in relation to the California Gubernatorial race and propositions.

If you are watching youtube in other parts of the country you are more likely to get somebody else such as Trump or other people as political ads before watching your intended shows though.

And here is the article backing this argument.

In the immediate run up to the U.S. presidential election and on Election Day, the homepage of YouTube is set to advertise just one candidate: Donald Trump.

The president’s re-election campaign purchased the coveted advertising space atop the country’s most-visited video website for early November, said two people with knowledge of the transaction. The deal ensures Trump will be featured prominently in the key days when voters across the country prepare to head to the polls Nov. 3.

Good. Then they won't appear as often on my OTA.

When I visit family in New Hampshire, nearly every ad inserted into any YouTube video I watch is political. Back home here in Connecticut, none of them are. Maybe I'll start seeing some if the Democrats still don't have a nominee by April 28, when our primary, which usually doesn't matter, is held. But those ads will dry up once Trump vs. Sanders/Biden/Warren/Bloomberg/Buttigieg starts in earnest, as Connecticut is about as safe a state for Democratic presidential candidates as there is.

You (and I) wish. Bloomberg ads are all over the Phoenix OTA channels. We have almost a month remaining of this round.

Bloomberg ads are all over Yakima stations. A Republican-solid market. I expected Trump to sell a lot of commercials towards this market, but I rarely if ever see Republican PAC or Trump campaign ads. And where's the other presidential candidates? I guess Warren, Klobuchar, et al haven't sold to the TV ad market yet?

It depends which states Warren, Klobuchar and the other DNC candidates are aiming for though. Here in Solano County, CA we get a lot of Tom Steyer ads but that's because in the past Steyer was known to fund political ads for Gubernatorial candidates, Ballot initiatives and mayor's in both the Sacramento and San Francisco Media Markets.

Maybe they are trying to make better use of their money by placing spots in areas that are battleground areas?

I use YouTube mainly for music videos -- for either live performances, or recordings. I've seen mostly ads for Bloomberg. Now and then one from Bernie. One from Trump.

The Bloomberg ones outnumber Bernie's maybe five or six to one. Haven't seen a single ad for another candidate. FWIW, I haven't seen any ads on FB...

Yeah, probably. WA will always be a safe Dem/blue state, whoever it is. Last time WA was won by a Republican was Reagan's landslide in 1984.

In Some states you might get political ads on Tik Tok and Facebook from RFK Jr, Stop Mandatory Vaccinations, Bernard Selz, Andrew Wakefield and Del Bigtree due to your state legislatures and governors dealing with the Vaccine exemption debate. Im not sure how many states in 2020 are dealing with a gubernatorial primary also though but I think the vaccine exemption debate might be a deciding factor though. Note California has their gubernatorial elections in 2022 (Presidential Midterm years). I suspect some states might get anti-vax aka vaccine exemption ads on Youtube, Twitch, Hulu and Amazon Prime too and its in association with the gubernatorial primaries in your state. Note since I am in California I may not see these ads on Social Media or TV outlets. I only find out about this whenever various news outlets talk abut this such as Washington Post, AP, Sacramento Bee's national wing (McClatchy News Services) and Patch put them out in google search for vaccine debates.

The majority of Facebook advertisements spreading misinformation about vaccines were funded by two anti-vaccine groups, including one led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., according to a study published this week.

The World Mercury Project, headed by Kennedy, and a California-based organization called Stop Mandatory Vaccination bought 54 percent of the anti-vaccine ads on Facebook, the study found.

Researchers said the results surprised them. Much of the anti-vaccine content posted on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter may appear to be organic, grass-roots discussions led by neighborhood groups and concerned parents, said David A. Broniatowski, an associate professor at George Washington University and one of the authors of the study.

“In fact,” said Broniatowski, who studies group decision-making, “what we are seeing is a small number of motivated interests that are trying to disseminate a lot of harmful content.” The small group of anti-vaccine ad buyers successfully used the ads to reach targeted audiences. The study was conducted before Facebook changed its policies around anti-vaccine advertising, but researchers said it provides a look at how the platform has been used to spread misinformation. The study also provides a baseline for researchers to evaluate how well Facebook’s new policies are working, said Amelia Jamison, a social science researcher at the University of Maryland and another study author

In West TN most of the ads have been fpr Bloomberg and Steyer. I haven't seen any for any other Democrats or even Trump.

Trump probably figures he doesn't need to run as many ads because he doesn't have any real competition in the primaries, and considering the Democrats are headed toward another sorry choice no matter who comes out on top he may not have to run as many for November. Meanwhile I look like I'll be wishing there was a choice for None of the Above again.:p

Here are the reasons why Tom Steyer has more presidential campaign ads in California more specifically in the San Francisco and Sacramento TV markets compared to other places. Yes this includes youtube.

Bloomberg does have the most ads running on the major channels, that's true, but the only other ones I noticed are McSally vs Kelly. It's not like past years when we used to get 3-4 ads running back to back.

How about Gubernatorial candidates I know in some states the Governor's primaries happen to take place in the same year as the presidential election. Are some states getting political ads on Youtube, Hulu, Twitch, OTA TV and Cable TV for governors too in the primary? (Note California has their Gubernatorial primaries and elections in midterm years in 2022)

An Update Mike Bloomberg is also named for having the most political ads spending on OTA radio.
Not Shocking that Tom Steyer and Mike Bloomberg have spent the most on political ads.

Continuing to ramp up its AM/FM spend, Mike Bloomberg For President is broadcast radio’s second largest advertiser for the week of Feb. 17-24 with 42,550 spot airings, according to Media Monitors which tracks national advertising in 85 markets. That makes the billionaire candidate for the Democratic presidential ticket second only to the ubiquitous presence of Flo and Progressive (52,169 occurrences) and ahead of radio stalwarts GEICO, Vicks and Indeed.

While the former New York City mayor has allocated unprecedented sums to TV advertising, his campaign has only recently taken to the radio airwaves, increasing its AM/FM outlay every week since late January. Here is the four-week spot count trend: 9,404 (Jan. 27-Feb 2), 21,332 (Feb. 3-9), 33,033 (Feb. 10-16) and 42,550 (Feb 17-23).

In the latest tally, you have to scroll all the way down to No. 73 to spot another political advertiser – fellow billionaire Tom Steyer's presidential campaign aired 7,812 spots.

Analysts asked execs at both Beasley Broadcast Group and Cumulus Media about political spending during the Q&A portion of their quarterly earnings calls last week. Beasley CFO Marie Tedesco said her company has booked $1 million in political ads so far in first quarter 2020 with “at least half” coming from Bloomberg’s self-funded campaign. Cumulus CEO Mary Berner, also responding to an analyst’s query, said they’re seeing “some nice dollars from the big, the big bucks” that Bloomberg and Steyer are investing in radio and TV.
